Planning on buying a 27 inch imac this Monday and was wondering if I should bring a friend along to help me carry the thing out to my car. :) It's probably like a 5 minute walk from the store to the parking lot of the mall.

According to the iMac Tech Specs site, the iMac itself weighs 30.5 lbs. I have no idea how much extra weight the packaging, keyboard, mouse, restore disc, manuals, and power cable will add, but I'd guess the whole thing's around 35 lbs. So, if you can carry 35 lbs for 5 minutes, you're set. Otherwise, maybe bring a friend

Also buying a printer too with the free $100 rebate
I'm gunna look like a weirdo carrying all that stuff around my arms, haha

I assure you that you will be able to handle this without a problem. My girlfriend's 100 lbs soakin' wet and managed to get it up the stair while I was at work. You should be fine.

and by the way: even if it takes a few times putting it down.... its worth every step. I've had mine for 3 days and I'm in "awwh" everytime i sit it front of it.

Agreed with everyone.

Picked it up from FedEx yesterday. It is
quite a large handful and I would be more
concerned about tired arms when handling
something that large more than the weight
itself. However, it is manageable.

Not gonna lie, it is heavy with the printer and the printer (got a Canon MX860). Handles aren't very good and the boxes are large enough to the point it is odd to carry them. Printer box doesn't have a handle worth anything. My Apple store has a cart and the sales guy helped bring them out to my car and load me up. Bring a friend or use the stores cart imho.

Yeah, the box seems awfully large to carry by the handle.

My FedEx tracking page has the weight listed as 19.3 kg/42.5 lbs.

I weigh like 106 lbs and I was able to get it up two flights of stairs, no problem. The only hard part, actually, wasn't because of the weight but because of the shape -- it was hard to get the box that the iMac box was in up the stairs. But the box at the Apple Store has a handle on it and everything. So you know, just support the bottom and you're good to go.

Now, adding a printer might be more tricky - but again, I would think that would be because of shape, not because of weight.

lol At the Staples here, they carry your purchase out to your car for you either by hand or by dolly. I know they don't sell Macs at Staples, but if you blow THAT much money at a store, they should get some employees to help you carry it to your car and secure in there. ;)

I guess that depends on whether you're a 6ft tall muscle-bound weightlifter or a 6 year old girl. ;) They are definitely fairly heavy.

If it's in mall, you might be able to "borrow" a supermarket trolley to get your new iMac to the car (although you would have to lift it into and out of the trolley). Another option could be to ask if the Mac store has a back delivery entrance that means you can get the car closer. Maybe even taking along a kids' skateboard or wagon might be an idea.

Either way, you're going to have a similar problem once you get to the other end of your car journey.

You should be able to carry the iMac yourself. I too had to go to the mall and purchase my iMac from the Apple store. 30lbs and that big box can get heavy. You'll be fine though.

well, you should be able to carry the thing yourself.. however you may look pretty weird doing it.
So just to not make people stare at you, I'd bring a friend along.
Or you could just order it online..

You'll be fine, as long as you're not taking a train home or anything. It'll be awkward, but you can manage. I would do it.

The iMac isn't too bad… has the handle. What was hard was carrying a Mac Pro, 4 HDDs, and a bunch of accessories by myself for a couple miles (no car)
