I understand the caution and it's a nice, respectable thing. I also think it's important not to make other people feel bad. If I was concerned about it, I'd treat the 27'' machine as something everyone can enjoy.

When it comes time to put the books away for a bit, you and your machine will deliver the best, funny youtube clips. For the whole room.

Or if theres a bit more time, and everyone's studies are done, and its after normal study time you can throw in a quick movie that everyone will enjoy right there on the spot.

Instead of your study mates thinking it's just your over-the-top computer, make it as something that is there for everyone and they'll see it as the go-to point when someone or everyone really needs to something clearly, or just wants to relax. Because its more useful and would bring some extra fun to the room this could actually help create a good perception.

Hey, great point! :D

I was thinking about this a bit more and I was thinking that you could drape it in a nice black cloth when not using it, and then when you come in to study each morning tell everyone to gather round and slowly remove the black cloth... say "wow everyone do you see how shiny and magnificent the screen on MY computer is". Then encourage them to applause vigorously.

Do this daily. :D

(LOL.... ok my earlier response was serious... this one not so much..haha)

Buy the best machine for your needs and don't worry about what others think. You are gonna be there for 3 years, get what works for you.

And remember, things change. It's possible that in 3 years, everyone else will be using screens closer in size to yours.

Thanks for your points of view, help me decide.

I do care, though, what they think of me since this is a totally different culture, and I don't know what is kosher and not, but I'd like them to help me out and be as friendly towards me as possible. But your probably right, it'll all come down to how many beers I buy them anyway... :)

I'll have to buy my own cause I'm a foreigner, or because they only provide japanese computers, I guess. And being in Japan, the iMac probably be pretty safe in office, not much crime here. I will put a footlock on it anyway, I think it is possible, right?

Dude you're in Japan that is an advanced society if you were in a country that wasn't so advanced as Japan I would think otherwise. Please, Japan has LCD touch screen cash registers at 7-11, which btw are like in every single corner over there, they have a Robot that greets you when you come into the Sony Store there in Ginza, and I am talking about in 2002 when I lived there. Get yourself that 27" and don't worry about it, the Japanese will admire you not envy you, trust me.

Very good point there. I think they already have flexible OLED screens and all sorts too.

Yeah Japan is a pretty advanced Tech country. By the way I was joking about the showing off with the spotlight LOL:D

Haha...was pretty funny though! :)

Seriously though to the OP I hope you get it as it's something that will make you happy and hopefully everyone loves the new, fun inclusion in the study room, and then slowly a few more Macs start appearing in the study room. I also wish that there was more people like you in the world that thought about others like that (and still loved tech gadgets too!)
