I sort of found a work around. With assist touch (the onscreen homebutton) you can configure 3d touch gesture on the button to pull up multitasking. It's a bit annoying seeing that onscreen button but it does imitate the gesture..

-> Search "AssistiveTouch" in settings, enable it
-> press "customize top level menu"
-> Set 3d touch action to "multitasking"

now i can 3d touch and swipe right to bring up multitasking.

**Minor update, set the "idle opacity" to 15% and it will almost disappear off the screen **

This is the reason I won't update to iOS 11
3D Touch multitasking was one of the best features ever on an iphone.
And now they take it away just to make iphone X more appealing.
What were they thinking?

Someone said it starts working again if VoiceOver is turned on. Can anyone confirm?

I do think this feature will come back in future updates to iOS 11 when they find a solution for the iPhone X gesture and 3D Touch gesture diversity. Also they did changed the App Switcher menu which would block the 3D Touch multitask gesture/animation. The animations of the multitasking menu have been fixed in the recent betas, so they could not manage to find a way to bring back the 3D Touch gesture.

One more addition is the reported bug for the issue is marked as duplicate of another report. And Apple said that they are working on the solution, and not mentioned "it is intended behavior".

My favorite aspect of the 3D-touch task switcher was that, once you triggered it, you could just swipe all the way across the screen, and it would go to your previously used app. It gave an easy way to switch quickly, back and forth, between two apps.

There's no way to do that when double-clicking the home button to bring up the task switcher.

You just prompted me to discover what I think is a new ‘feature’ of the app switcher...
I believe it used to always put your current app at the right most side. You could easily switch back and forth between the same last two apps by tapping the middle app.

However now, if you enter app switcher very quickly after selecting an app from it, the app order is preserved and you can continue going backwards through multiple apps by tapping the middle app and quickly reentering app switcher mode again

Hope this makes sense. Doesn’t really relate to this thread, just an interesting find.

Bummer for those who liked using it. I found it way too tricky and unreliable. If I didn't press it just right, which is like 60% of the times that I tried it, I got the widget page instead, and I could never get it to work one-handed since my other hand had to be under the phone for the force-touch to register (having the Plus might be a reason for that), so I've always found double-clicking the home button to be faster and smoother in my experience.

You're totally right! Thanks for pointing that out. That makes switching a bit easier now, with the new changes. Still going to miss the 3D-touch task switcher... :(

It turns out I was right. Yay!
