After installation iPadOS 17.2 takes up 10GB and system data takes another 10GB. I get out of storage messages now. Tried a hard reset but it’s not reclaiming the storage and there’s no way to delete the update files. I guess that’s Apples way of forcing everyone to buy > 64GB devices
Hope you get it sorted out. The 10th gen and Air still start at 64GB, so I think Apple just expects us to use iCloud if we need more room.

I guess Apple is failing miserably with their “forcing everyone to buy > 64GB devices” in my case then. ;)

This is my 64 GB iPad Air 5, running absolutely everything I need and keeping most of my stuff in the cloud.

Basically, it all depends on how people use it and their particular workflows…

Exactly that. Funny, the OP joined an hour before their question, made a second post to this thread and hasn’t let us know if we talked them out of the 2nd gen or not.

Back to storage, the older I get the simpler I want my life and my personal technology. Less is more, especially with digital files, storage, and automation. For years I had external drives for backing everything up, but during the pandemic I had the time to “Marie Kondo” my digital life and decided that I was keeping useless files out of habit.

My personal “paperwork” is simple enough that I just keep printed copies of tax returns and not much else, since everythng is online at the bank, doctor, etc. Hardly anything in my iCloud account except some receipts and photos.

I used to keep my iTunes library backed up, but I recently realized that’s unnecessary. There was also a time when I would DVR tv shows using the Mac and store those as well. That’s all out of my life now and I gave away the external drives and the cables and the “too many adapters“ and recycled my drawer of old Apple junk at the Apple Store and feel great.

I’m also trying to use things more “out of the box” whenever possible [with less customization and automation], so I don’t freak out years later when something goes wrong and I forgot how I set things up.

If you did not get the 64 Gb iPad what do you suggest Apple offer?

I am betting someday you will be rethinking this item.

Hehe, in hindsight, my buying and tinkering with all those drives, cables, adapters, software, etc. over the years was just something to do.

Even my “precious” iOS backups to iTunes, the Time Machine backups of the Mac, and backup of Time Machine, were just busywork. I realized I only put data into Apple’s default apps for my iPhone, IPad, and Mac, and have iCloud on it all (nothing is on my Mac that isn’t in iCloud, and I can get to it on iOS).

If I weren’t able to access my iCloud iPhone or iPad backup someday, I’d just log in with my ID and set up my preferences again.

I hope your Mac works longer and better then my only ever deviation from a windows computer i made, i was talked into buying a Mac and i hated it from the first day until it died within two years just $2,600 of junk.
Only things Apple makes today that are good is their iPhones and iPads.

My iPad mini is 64GB and I’m not a gamer… the biggest annoyance is that it “offloads” apps to free up space, so if I haven’t used an app lately if likely needs to reinstall. It actually works pretty well for all that, just a short delay. But, I’m looking forward to getting a 256 at the next update.
My last iPad Mini had 64GB, and it was tight in the end. No gamer either.
When I bought a new Mini last year, it was logical to get a 256GB, and it will be fine for some years, no doubt. I don’t want to have to think about what I save on it even if it's only temporary, as most goes onto iCloud. I might even be able to keep it longer then the old just because of it.

The last few years I only sit at my Mac (a 2018 mini) long enough to update MacOS, so I don’t plan to replace it when it becomes too old or fails. Work provides a Windows laptop and the pandemic made my iPad my most used device for everything non-work related. I use iPad MUCH more than my iPhone too.

During all the digital housecleaning I mentioned above, I stopped using the Mac for backups, DVR, and serving iTunes (no longer necessary since anything with Apple Music can play all the music I purchased from iTunes over the years). I don’t need the Mac at all, but I’ll keep it around for the foreseeable future.

I replaced my 4 year old iPad 64Gb with a iPad Air5 256Gb and not so much for any storage of photos or documents, i still say some of the iPads memory is being used for holding items that are being looked at when scrolling them.

I do not understand your question, could you perhaps rephrase it? As mentioned in my post, I did get the 64 GB iPad and am very happy with it.

Apple and I 😉 think that 64 GB is the current minimal acceptable amount of storage, but I guess the new iPads coming out in 2024 will have it increased to 128 GB, just as iPhones did.

Someone posted they did not think they even needed the 64Gb i just asked what did they feel Apple should require as to the memory.

I also posted that i thought the memory was needed for other then just storage.

I see. I would not go lower than 64 GB of storage. Memory (RAM) is a different matter, however, and it was not brought up by the OP.

I’m not asking for much, I just want to know why the System data on my iPad Air jumped from 1GB to 10GB after upgrading from iPadOS 16 to 17. My iPhone that has 4x as many apps and thousands of downloaded files only consumes about 1GB of system data.

I already stream all my music and videos from the cloud and keep less than 20 third party apps on the iPad (no games cos they’re too large)

Mine is 64GB. I think I have YouTube, Civilization, Pages, Tropico,Vice City, San Andreas and other apps on there and I have 28GB available storage.
I store my photos in the cloud. It's enough for me.

It also depends on your specific model and always has depended on those things.
I have 64GB and have plenty of games. I mainly play Among Us and Civilization and sometimes GTA and still have enough free storage.
