Ugh. Sorry to hear about those issues. I have the same model with none of those problems, so it sounds like something is going on with your computer. Can you exchange / return?
I’m still under warranty and I have AppleCare+, so shouldn’t be any issues there. I’m strongly considering an exchange.

Apple Diagnostics reported no issues with the fans. But I suppose some issues may not show up.

I’ll see how it does over the next few days. If I keep getting the mystery woodpecker, back it goes.

Supplemental answer:

No. The 16" 2019 MBP i9 is not a good device.
Well...having owned one until very recently, I would say it's not a "bad machine"....just that it's been superseded in most categories, except the ability to run x86 software.

I do not miss the heat, fan noise and mediocre battery life one bit though.

2019 16” MBP is on it way back. Decided to get a 2020 13” M1 MBP.

I’ll miss the larger screen size, but overall I’m kinda disappointed in the battery life and defects straight out of the box.

Probably should have taken heed of the warnings ITT lol. Anyway, it was fun while it lasted. Thanks everyone

Scratch that…I’ve decided to spend a little extra and go with the 14” M1 Pro! I’m still not super crazy about the design but it’s growing on me.

In the end it’s worth it to me for more power, a bigger screen, more Thunderbolt ports, and the new MagSafe3 charger (I hate the USB-C charging ports). I can live with the notch, lol.

The cesspit of civilization
I’m thinking of upgrading to this instead of a iMac M1 due to budget + just being a bit unsatisfied with the age and performance of my 2012 MBP. Should I splurge a bit on this or hold out for an iMac? I like the idea of having some portability while having a much more up to date device. The new 16” M1s are prohibitively expensive for my budget and I’m not super crazy about the new design language anyway.

Anyone own one of these? Likes? Dislikes? Bugs or hardware issue to watch out for?
I'm very happy with mine. I got one the moment the M1s were rumored to be announced, since I depend on windows virtual machines for a significant amount of my income, and the ARM-based machines were not expected to run virtualization software for some time (even now, you need to run beta versions of everything for this, and its not reliable yet).

So I went all in on an i9 and haven't had any reason to complaint yet. It is a great upgrade from my 2015 13" MBP.

Glad you got it sorted. I have a high end 16 M1 Max and a 2019 16 i9. M1 Max is my main machine but there are still things I can only do on the intel machine so I can't ditch it yet. I also like to travel with the intel since I use the M1 Max as a desktop replacement for now.

I think you made the right call. I use one M1 Air for work, and own a 14" M1 Pro for myself. The M1 Air is just utterly amazing in its power and battery output. Bought my first Mac in 1994. I think the M1 is one of the biggest and best Mac moves ever made. I've not loved a laptop this much since my Pismo. They're not making a 2019 Macbook Pro useless at all - but all of the benefits of the M1 is just fantastic, unless you need Bootcamp of course.
