I knocked my 11 pro off the bathroom sink countertop when brushing my teeth. The screen is pretty badly cracked. Apple wants $499. The local repair shops all want $520... sad face.

Glass screen protectors come close to the same feel, but the problem is that they don't have that anti-glare coating that the screen does. So you end up with a half-a$$ed solution that looks horrible in any semi-bright environment.

But what about the tiny little scratches you get through daily use...Apple pen f.e.
If you keep your iPad screen clean and Pencil tip clean, you won't get scratches. I use a matte protector because I don't like the fingerprint smudges that are noticeable on the bare screen, I like the elimination of glare, and I like the slight resistance it gives for the Pencil...makes it feel more "natural".

Ironically the wear that I observed on the anti-reflective coating on my wife’s Air 2 is what convinced me to put a tempered glass screen protector onto my gen 2 12.9 since day 1. My wife has had a smart over on her Air 2 from purchase (that we periodically replace) and carries her ipad in her backpack daily. There’s noticeable wear in the coating that I can only assume is coming from the rubbing of the Smart Cover as the ipad is carried in bag.

I’m using a glass screen protector, and it was like $10 bucks for my iPad 11” on Amazon. It went on very easy the first try, it hides finger prints, the touch response is not affected at all. And it protects my screen from scratches. It makes the experience much better for me because I’m not worried about damaging my screen all the time. I feel like I can actually relax and enjoy the device. It will not protect from drops or things like that. But, you can lay your iPad face down without worrying because the screen protector is 0.33mm thick.

Oh and, you cannot replace screens due to minor cosmetic damage through AppleCare.

So, unless your screen is broken you are forced to live with the scratches.

I’d get a screen protector. It takes a lot of work to maintain a scratch free screen without one.

{{You must be OCD about washing your hands, make sure your folio cover is dirt free all the time, and when you wipe your screen you must use a clean micro fiber that is kept in a plastic bag. And never let anyone else use your iPad}}

^^^^ lol if you can follow those strict directions, you can keep your screen scratch free without a screen protector.^^^

Pay the $499 and move on.

If your careful with your iPad, you can avoid obvious scratches. Although micro scratches are going to occur no matter what you do unless you use a screen protector.

I never had one on any of my iPads. iPad, Air, Air2, Pro 12.9 3rd gen. Never had any issues or problems.

Used to use em on iPhones till 6S when I stopped. None on 7, 7S, XS Max. No issues no problems.

Got sick of over preserving screen for next user. I do get Applecare+. Have never used it except for replacement cables.

I am wondering if you use an ipad for a couple of years without screen protector, even if you are carefull and baby your devices, does it still show micro scratches from normal use?

Cheers!

Short answer Yes it could ! But only over a period of time that too with heavy and through use.

I had one on my 10.5 iPP but removed it. It reduced fingerprints (why I got it) but had worse glare (I don't care for matte covers). I like it better without and I've never had an issue with scratches on any device I've owned over many years.

I got to this forum from an online search re: CRACKED I-PAD SCREEN. My grandson gifted me with a crack on my i-pad screen. The device works fine; but I would like to make sure the screen doesn't start to bend along the crack. Only yesterday I discovered three vendors selling glass covers. One wants twenty-five dollars. One wants forty dollars. The third said, "Air will rise through the crack, get trapped under the cover, and make things worse." I need more opinions!!!

If you have an already cracked screen device, it becomes imperative that now you have to use it with a Screen Protector on it. Otherwsie It wont be a very nice experience viewing and using it, Just my Two Cents !!

Is there anyway to refurb the Oleophobic coating though? I find that my 10.5” (2017) gets smudged with finger prints very easily.

I use both a screen protector (temper glass) and both my iPhone and iPad Pro for peace of mind. Since I paid good money for my devices it would make sense to invest in some drop protection for them.

Hello, how are you?
For some years to this day, I always used screen protectors on both my tablets and my phones.
I used them before tempered glass became a thing even, so I have been using them since those plastic membrane days.

But today I went to the Apple Store to try out some iPads and iPhones since I am looking to upgrade.

And I must say the naked screens felt really good to the touch.
And also looked great. I could really feel the laminated screen on the iPad pros without a thick tempered glass on top.

With phones, since I use mine frequently on jeans and jacket pockets, a screen protector is pretty much obligatory to avoid those micro scratches.

But how about iPads?
How do you find the resilience of the screen to micro scratches?
Do you use a screen protector?
Do you not use one? If you don’t use one, how is your screen?

What are your thoughts on this matter?

Thanks.
Cheers.
“Need” depends on the individual. I personally despise the feel of the oleophobic and anti-glare glass.

It can scratch so don’t believe anyone that says it doesn’t. All it takes is one speck of dirt to leave a beautiful glowing rainbow scratch. The best thing about a screen protector is that you don’t have to be gentle. It’s a lifesaver for a heavy Apple Pencil user. A screen protector can be replaced, a screen can’t.

A touchscreen is the main component of any smartphone or tablet. With a cracked or unresponsive touchscreen, the phone is scrap. So, the iPad may or may not resist the drops. If the iPad failed to resist the fall from a height, the screen can be broken and the repair cost of the iPad Screen is very expensive.

So, it is always advisable to apply the screen protector to protect the screen from the unintentional drops.
