I have had a 32gb wifi iPad for almost a week now and have only just noticed a little hole behind the screen top centre where the camera was rumoured to be.
As it is likely a camera will be an addition to the iPad2 does anyone else think it a possiblity that apple will offer a service to put a camera into 1st gen iPads, seems it would appear it just needs the camera unit sloting in?

I believe that is the auto brightness sensor.

Camera would be more useful seems my auto brightness sensor seems to have little effect.lol

Fair enough. Would be useless to me. No need for a camera on my device, and I like that the iPad will change the screen brightness depending on the light conditions.

Still, I'll give you $1000000 if Apple offer to take your old iPads, remove the autobrightness sensor and replace it with a camera and give you back the iPad.

A front camera wouldn't be all that useful b/c you'd have to hold the iPad straight up in front of you which, given it's size and weight would be awkward after the first minute. In the past month I've never held it like that. I'm always looking down at. Look down at a mirror. That is what the other side would see -- your nose whiskers. Not real useful.

I'll double that and I'll give you a unicorn.

It will never happen.

I wouldn't mind if the iPad had a camera, but it's about #15 on the list of improvements I'd be interested in ... and of course there's zero chance Apple will retrofit existing iPads to add a camera.

Someone may come up with a way to plug a portable camera to the iPad via the dock port, who knows.

Surely if it was on the dock or held at the same angle as say a macbook screen on a desk it would work fine? after all it does work fine on the macbook! it would just need a bit of a tilt.

Anyway it doesnt look like it will happen anyway, thanks for the input.

And thanks for letting me know its the light sensor, ill try not to hold my hand over it when in landscape mode.

Absolutely NOT going to happen!

I already have a camera, the camera a and camera b apps sync my ipheone camera to my iPad and it shows same image and takes pictures right to the iPad. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure you can wait a couple of generations for a camera. I know its going to come now that its on the iphone.

I can't imagine wanting to use my iPad as a camera. It is enormous. If I want to take photos, I take it with my iPhone or my real camera.

Would it be possible for a third party to offer an external camera for video chatting? This wouldn't be suitable for snapping photos of course, but since its external you could position it at better angle than one built in to the iPad itself.

This is technically feasible via the dock port. The question is, will Apple allow it, and will there be enough of a market for someone to go to the effort.

But in terms of hardware, there's no reason the dock port couldn't handle the flow of data, and no reason the iPad CPU and other hardware couldn't handle it either.

Cool. I think I'd rather have the camera as an external accessory than built in anyway so I'd be interested in this. A built in forward facing camera in the iPad would be difficult--since how would you type on it and at the same time get a good face shot?

Are you that ignorant to having a camera on the iPad?

Front facing camera- skype, iChat, facebook
back facing camera - augmented reality.

Give me one million and I guarantee I can get a camera put in. Also you can keep the unicorn, they are a pain to keep fed.
