Most texts I get are short, so being wider does nothing. You just get more white space on the screen and I see less of the conversation.
But in the situation you described there would be no benefit or loss either way, as is the case with shorter messages. Unless by lines you mean different individual texts, in which case it might become a bit annoying scrolling more.

Nothing to brag about, really. You have no choice. You'll never have landscape and a lot of other things while you're on 2.2.1. At least on 3.0 and above, we can "choose" to have either, whatever problem the user may have with that. You never know, Apple may put in an option in 4.0.

Believe me, I don't miss anything from 3.0. I can't use most of the features anyways.

Push: I don't have a data plan.

Find my iPhone: No MobileMe and no data.

I love the speed and responsiveness of 2.2.1 on my iPhone 3G. Everyone has probably gotten so used to 3.x that they've forgotten the type of speed and stability of 2.2.1. So what if it doesn't have a million features... It's fast!

Really?? I didn't know. :)

I love the landscape KB.

Really, we would have never known unless you told us 36 times before.

I love and use the landscape keyboard all the freakin' time.

However, the OP's point is well-taken. I, too, have done the I-want-to-check-my-email-while-laying-sideways-in-bed bit before, and when it switches to landscape, that pretty much makes it impossible to do comfortably.

I am also JB'd, though (and proudly, I might add), and didn't know of Rotation Inhibitor until this thread. You learn new things every day! Best of all, it's an SBSettings toggle, which means I can easily lock out app rotations quickly while lying in bed, and then undo it before I face the day. :)

Love the landscape keyboard and use it all the time. I am irritated instead by the inconsistency that the calender app doesn't support landscape keyboard.

I would love to have the option to turn it off !!!

I was one of the people asking for it at the start... UGH I wish I had never asked for it lol

I think it is fine to have as an OPTION .... let us turn it off please...

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. Portrait mode just shows you more. Plain and simple.

I can see more e-mails when I open my inbox:

And I can see more of a text message conversation as I'm having it:

Er...yes. The lines would just be wider instead of taller; the same information would be displayed.

Yeah, sorry. I'm just not seeing it.

I complained about this the day they introduced it.

Every application should have this in its settings:

"Allow rotation - yes/no"

Many 3rd party apps offer this functions (such as Tweetie 2) but the Apple-made apps all lack it. Yes, landscape mode is useful for some things, but never in the Mail or SMS app. Let me turn it off.

The in-app option should absolutely be there.

I've noticed that as well.

I find it interesting that Apple creates an App, and then never really updates it. Other devs find the time to improve their apps based either on customer requests or common sense, but Apple seems to pretty much lock an app down once it's released.

Do they really think that Weather App is perfect as it is? They couldn't add more features to Notes App (I use YouNote, which allows many other options for your notes)?

Yes, a while ago they updated Stocks and Calculator, but surely :p there is more that can be done even with those apps.

I've noticed that many women and recent adopters exclusively text in landscape. For myself, it's difficult to remember having been without for two years.

I would love the option to turn it off. If for any other reason, I found a bug in Mail. If I touch a mail to be read, and I rote the phone while it's loading the message, the screen turns black, and stays black. If I leave Mail, and return to the app, the screen is still black. The only way to fix it is to reboot the phone.

Anyone else have this issue?

I've experienced that in 3rd party Apps but never Mail. In the future, while in Mail hold power until slide to power off appears then hold home button until Mail closes.

I rarely use portrait. I'm mostly still a one handed device user. I mainly use portrait for Vids & Youtube, Remote PC apps, & of course games(don't have a choice). Mostly everything else is landscape.

I think you have your terminology mixed up. As LANDSCAPE is used for vids, YouTube vids, and most games.

Portrait is what you see on the homescreen
landscape is what you see when you tilt the phone on it's side

point being is of this thread, is I never use it, and if it ever activates by me even waving my arm around, being on a 3G it takes 2-3 seconds to go hack to portrait.
An option to turn it off would be nice, thats alll.......

Wow... personally, I wish it were in MORE apps and places , but agree that it would be good to have the option.

+1! Would love to see landscape option for all apps, but agree that it's not for everyone, so the ability to turn it off, as well.

I remember people on here moaning and moaning about how they wanted it.

Personally, I never use it.

I agree. I remember this board was full of posts about landscape coming and how great it would be. Personally, I do not like it much and never use it.

For those of you that like it I'm glad Apple got it for you.

It was just half a year back that people were asking for landscape in everything. Anyway, there should be an option to turn it off in OS 4.0.
