Design that robs the computers of potential power.

Where's the dedicated graphics in the MacBook? Where's the 9700M in the MacBook Pro?

Thanks for stating the truth. My next computer will most likely be a PC, because it will actually perform, for a good price. It comes at the sacrifice of no OS X, but I'll live with it, knowing that I got a better system for my money.

MBP plays pc games fine.

Specs don't mean a thing when windows slows down after a few months of usage, or when it's infected into botnet and sends out spam without you knowing.

LOL you keep harping on that point in every thread. Simple maintenance of your computer (aka hitting the defrag button and going to sleep) takes care of the vast majority of issues. Not being a moron online also helps a lot. I've ran Vista x64 on my enthusiast desktop for more than a year and it runs without slowdowns but then again, I'm not considered a general user.

Also, good luck having the MBP compete against PC hardware on games, especially seeing how the graphics are already a generation behind

Anyways, back to the thread:

I doubt they ever will. Apple is about profit margins and gaming consoles are NOT conducive to it. Companies often release consoles to push technology for the rest of their business. Like Sony's main money is not made in the PS2 or PS3 (it's still losing money). One could argue, however, they used the PS3 to promote sales of its HDTV's and win the Blu-Ray format war.

Also, a lot goes into getting game companies to support your console. Enthusiast games are being produced for the PS3 and 360 at much higher rates than the Wii (which while fun, is sorely lacking in good titles) largely because of issues such as this.

re:chewietobbacca

I have a custom, QUIET, high power gaming pc that costs close to $2000. I can have the top score in TF2 either using my MBP or the gaming pc.

However, I can't really the gaming pc at the airport can't I?

Yes windows does slow down even with maintenance and that is extremely annoying.

I don't think the person you replied to cared about using it at the airport.

hitting the defrag button does not solve all the problems and simply 'speed up' your computer to its original state. surely an experienced user such as yourself should know that, and wouldnt say that on a post where you are trying to sound superior (thats just naive).

you should of said that windows does require quite a lot of care to keep it running smoothly, and if you do it right the results can be very positive. as long as you dont install stupid software that is poorly written, and dont have hundreds of background tasks running from startup, and keep your registry clean by not installing useless software you should be fine. i am not sure of the moron online thing means, but you get that sometimes.

of course! that is how it works! you could base that solely on how poor the PS3 actually performs, and on the PS2 aswell i guess. i find the PS3 to be laggy, i wouldnt expect that in these times with the technology. the games shouldnt push the hardware to the limits, but it should be good enough so that you dont notice any deprecations in quality/performance. but no, apple will not bring out a gaming console. i dont know where the idea came from..but it is purely false.

the wii also lacks the hardware to do ANYTHING good with the graphics, but nintendo has always been like that.

the ps3 & 360 have got their market and i dont think that there is any spot for an extra console

I can spec out a 15" Sager with a 2.53 Ghz processor, 9800M GTS graphics, and 4GB RAM for $1600. Beat that with a Mac.

What-what-whaaaat! Please say you've only been alive for 2 years and therefore know nothing of the previous gens of video games consoles? In terms of power, me laddo-
NES>Master System
SNES>Mega Drive
N64>PS1
Gamecube=Xbox>PS2

It has only ever been the current gen in which Nintendo didn't have the edge in hardware capability.

---
And I'm not disputing that Tallest Skil. Current Apple computers seem to have nice everything, just terrible GPU's. Although they do seem very high quality, Apple machines are the only ones that have never developed a fault. I don't mind paying for quality.
But my next machine will certainly a high-end desktop PC. Should be the perfect partner for my MB.

Actually, the Master System was far more powerful than the NES. The Genesis (or Mega Drive if you prefer) had a significantly faster processor, but the SNES had the better graphics chip and sound processor.

How odd, I always knew the SMS could display more colours on screen (or give the illusion of, another article I found shows multiconsole games on both NES and SMS and the NES certainly lacked colour) but never knew the CPU was better.

Look at http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/09/games-that-defined-sega-master-system.html for some examples of games that showcase the SMS. Honestly, when I played Sonic 1 for the SMS, I was amazed at how well the game had transitioned to the 8-bit console.

I doubt an apple gaming console would ever take off because there is a stigma surrounding apple and games. Gamers just associate macs with having no games so it would be incredibly difficult for apple to launch a new gaming platform. Frankly I hope there will be no more platforms because it strains the industry. When you have to develop for various platforms it drives costs and production times way up, this is why PC gaming is suffering a bit.

Unfortunately, the Pippen didn't do well for Apple.

That is about as close as we'll see.

Don't think we will see another dedicated game console attempt from Apple. Besides, as good as the App store is working why would they?

The pippen argument again. Please go back and read the post I made pointing out that the Pippen was nothing more than a proof of concept.

They did not avertise it. Apple did not have any real games lined up for it....

How do you expect something to do when there are no games lined up at launch, never advertise the system.

The Pippen is completely unheard of by anyone but apple fans. That tells you right there that the the failure was 100% apple fault and not a failure of the idea.

as long as nintendo exist, apple will never enter the console market. Apple like to enter markets that are established which contain large, slow to change and uninventive companies. Apple enter by innovating/doing something the other companies can't or won't do and disrupt the market. iPhone is a great example. However nintendo plays that role in the console market (inventing the D-pad, introducing analogue controls, motion sensors and force feedback to console control pads) Despite their success they are still a small company compared to their current competition. Microsoft make OS software and Sony make just about everything you can plug in or that takes a battery! nintendo just make videogame hardware and videogame software, they're the only one left! that makes them very robust and dynamic as a company. Long story, short: Apple couldn't compete. So they won't even try.

Actually, it was more than that. In Japan there were over 80 games for it.

In the US, the number of games was much less. However, many Mac games would run on it with a relatively small bit of modification.

They did not avertise it.
Yes, there was advertising for it. It I can find some pics/links I'll post them.

The point of my quoting the other poster, is that Apple did go down this road before -- even if you want to call it a proof of concept.

The iPhone/touch interface is here to stay and is working well for Apple. App store sales are good. Why change the focus?

That looks like crap , weighs a ton , and can't run native OS X

There , I beat it

6.5 lbs. is a lot for you? It looks professional, if you're talking about the Sager NP8660. Actually looks nicer than a Mac. And you don't NEED OS X for games. It's actually a negative.

If you buy a laptop primarily for games then you're pretty much going down a stupid road to begin with

I use my Macbook Pro to run professional apps , several instances of Fusion when needed to run some linux database apps at various clients in addition to the OS X ones and it still can fire up a game whenever needed

So yes , I would take a Macbook Pro over a Sager any day

i must agree with "kahine" on this one, that thing does look quite ungly because to me it resembles an HP... which are ugly by default. and besides, blue just doesnt do it for me.

spec wise im sure its very nice, but youve gotta have the best of both worlds.

yeah can't wait and it will happen

The thing that makes me lose sleep at night is that I may have to buy a windows phone... eventually. You know it's coming, 'XBOX LIVE PLAYABLE' on your mobile. It will start with just being able to access chat and other like ventures. Then they will allow you to play mini games like pac man and other dated but very fun games, all while racking up gamerpoints. THen ;( the big one. 'playable games' such as fifa and call of duty on your phone, from anywhere, I mean anywhere. With a lump in my throat I say damn you xbox you have me using a windows phone in my dreams! Damn you DAMN YOU!!!!

The only remedy for this recurring nightmare, is for MAC to make a console! PLease do it brains at mac, Please! ...dont make me have that filth in my pocket. I don't deserve it and I juST don'T Want it :(

they don't seek console market. it's now too late. there are too much competition. they don't have space. it's not a phone. it's different. Apple can't be successful. I bet it 200% for sure. but they already have mobile device. it's called 'ipad'. we already know. they are focused on mobile based games. it's much more profitable.

if they did..

tell you right now anything apple has released in the last 10 years has killed every brand in the dame category. look at the iPhone.. and now is one of the most popular thats what apple does. if they actually took the time to build one it would ruin MS and sony. look at the fail launches of problems they had.. either way Apple tv mixed into a console with actual unreal graphics and OS would slay in the console marked, cause the xbox one and ps4 are poor upgrades. Yes if apple did release a console id imagine it would cost about 1g..
