To this day, I'm not sure if the "shift" key is pressed when it's darker, or lighter.

'Light' was on in iOS 7. 'Dark' is on in iOS 7.1 and newer.

Nothing leaves a bad taste in people's mouths like taking UI feedback people are used to, and swapping it around.

I think the last quarter's financials says it all. Doesn't seem to be a bad taste in the tens of millions of new customers.

I don't think that there is any correlation between Apple w/o Forstall and the the last quarter's financials.
Most probably it has to do with the new iPhone models introduced to the market. Customers buy iPhones because of its reputation etc. and not because of the new UI. They buy an iPhone whatever (i.e. iOS version) it comes with.
