Thanks for the info.

I get 'Two-Factor Authentication not available for your Apple ID at this time'

I live in the UK am on ios 9 and have been with apple for about 8 years.
Will try if it works on El Cap later.

Maybe country specific.

If it doesn't work I'll try the 'two step' (sound like a dance!)

I got that message via iPhone....it works then setup via iCloud.com macbook

Enabling 2 factor authentication for Apple ID is important to do, but you really really really need to enable it for your email account if they offer it - Gmail, Yahoo!, etc. That's where your password reset emails go so if you have lots of accounts/web services all going to the same email account then you've got to protect it. If someone hacks your email they can likely get into most other accounts you have on the web and then you're screwed.

I'll re try today via macbook..I didn't complete the authorisation via macbook, though got much further than iPhone -I need to re charge i phone today and re try. I've never setup 2 two step verification previously as I didn't want to start remembering additional passwords/keys etc. I'll re try though and switch off if I don't like it.

Here's what I got via e-mail when setting up via macbook today.

For security reasons, you must wait until October 28, 2015 at 10:19:15 AM (GMT) before you can begin using two-step verification. You can sign in to Apple ID after this time to complete the set up process. For more information, read the FAQ.

via macbook
You must wait 3 days to enable two-step verification.
This waiting period helps ensure that no one other than the owner of this Apple ID can set up two-step verification. A notification email will be sent to all addresses we have on file. Thank you for your patience.

Please come back after 10:19 AM on October 28, 2015 (GMT) to continue setup.

if you can enable it! I can't (UK)

Yikes! Then I suggest very strong, unique passwords for all your online accounts. An app like LastPass will generate, remember, and populate credential prompts with passwords as strong as you want/need. Here's a sample 24 character password: KSBUEyfatz&bMWN3WFn%@XOA. Good luck, hackers! ;)

I have just enabled two step on my gmail but not sure how to do that on an me e-mail account, will it be icloud now? thanks

sorry its two factor verification on iphone that isn't allowing me to enable. I am confused with the difference between this and two step.

at the moment it asks me least favorite car, city first kissed etc & has my mobile number on icloud.

Two-Step Verification.

If you have iPhone or additional device..make sure its switched on, my iPhone is always signed into iCloud cause I use mail/apple music etc.

thanks for your reply. I must have that setup as I have just tried it. `i think it must be the two factor `i'm trying to enable https://www.macrumors.com/2015/07/08/ios-9-el-capitan-two-factor-authentication/

seems more up to date.

all very confusing actually by apple computers inc

Thanks I guess your correct..think I must be...As noted by Apple, not all beta testers and developers will have access to the new two-factor authentication system right away, but Apple plans to add additional testers gradually as we get closer to the release of iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan.

I have two-step authorization turned on for everything that offers it - iCloud, Email services, Dropbox, Evernote, Microsoft (Office365), IFTTT, Facebook and a few others.

I use complex alphanumeric passwords and with assistance from a password manager app and Safari password suggestion.

My iOS devices have FMiP turned on, "send last location upon critical battery" turned on, and are set to wipe the device after 10 unsuccessful password attempts.

My MacBook Air has FileVault turned on and Open Firmware Password is turned on to prevent unauthorized target disk mode. My only Windows (Win 10) device has Bit Locker turned on.

I use a trusted VPN service when I need to use unknown or suspect wifi hotspots (airports, hotels, etc).

While only as secure as the offerings can be, I'm as careful as possible to make sure it's very difficult to get in to my stuff without me knowing about it or that the device is rendered useless should it disappear.

now to re-read your post about five times to fully understand.
