I am wondering if heat is really a HUGE issue in MBP's because I will be getting one in June and reading all these posts about MBP's overheating causes some concern. Any input is appreciated!

Not a massive issue. As long as you don't make it run massively intensive tasks while it's not in a well-ventilated area, you should be fine. 
I am unsure on the newest revisions (Core 2 Duo) but on my Rev A. 15in MBP I am on my third Logic board replament - twice due to thermal issues and once because of a stubborn firmwire that wouldn't update.
I have had problems but it is always at my side when needed, as well as I have been told that the next problem instantly equates to a brand new replacment. Apple Care is definitely something to budget in when buying a new computer.
But with all these problems I still don't regret the purchase.
I've had a 15" C2D for a little under a week now, and I haven't found the heat to be a big issue. Yes, it's warmer than my G4 Powerbook ever was, but not too hot.
As I say though, I have only had it a week and I haven't done anything really intensive yet.

I had a CD 2.0Ghz, which was replaced with 2.33Ghz C2D 3 weeks ago (screen issues and logic board damaged during repair), and neither of them had heat issues. My girlfriend has a 1.83Ghz CD MBP with no heat issues also. They can get hot if you are doing anything intensive but you wouldn't usually have it on your lap for such tasks.
C2D sits between 35C - 44C with safari, mail, adium (it might get warmer if you open a page with flash with heavy actioinscripting). Core Duos, the one I had and the one my girlfriend has, are slightly warmer but not by much. None have caused us any discomfort.

I have a MBP C2D, and no, I dont think heat is an issue at all. it gets a bit warm, to be expected, but compared to my old laptop, where if you could fry an egg on the RAM cover! really, my old dell used to go up to 70 - 80 degrees celcius in heavy gaming envrionments. still working great though. but compare the apple to that and its ice!
I have a rev B MBP. Yes heat is a problem. If i dont manage fans while playing WOW, my MBP heats up enough to as where it corrupts data enough until the system kernel panics and has to be rebooted. Or crazy things such as colors getting messed with or polygons draw wrong.

If you have some intense apps running then yes it will heat up. When this happens, usually when I'm running photoshop, illustrator, firefox, itunes on mac side and rhino, a-cad on pc side and swapping between them regularly then yes it gets hot. So I take a little break and let it cool down, close some apps and have a coke.
Heat is not an issue. I got a Core Duo Macbook Pro and to be honest its fine on the temperature side of things. Of course its going to get hot when you load it but thats expected
I've used both the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo MBP, and the Core 2 Duo's don't feel nearly as hot as the Core Duo did. So, if you're getting what Apple currently is selling, you probably won't have heat issues.
At best, yes and no. No, it's not an issue, the CPU won't overheat, no it won't melt the computer or cause it to catch fire. but hell yes it's an issue. Just sitting here with it on battery power, the bottom is hot and going through my pant legs. On my old laptop, I would've been scared it was overheating if it's this hot from just web browsing.. but now it's just considered normal

IHMO, NO heat is not a major problem or even a concern. On the left palm rest where your HD is that may get a little warm but nothing I find to be disturbing or a concern, as far as underneath, the MBP, nope nothing there have had it on my lap with shorts on and No problems again, maybe if you were to up the HD to a 7200 than you mite have some issues.
Given that I have only used one CD and several C2Ds I must say I was frightened by the heat of the CDs doing idle stuff (and it was NOT fun blasting both cores to max), on the C2D I wasn't surprised at the warmth because it only happened when both cores were running max. So, CD is hot always and the CD is hot only when pushed to the max.

Compared to many other 'high-end' notebooks, yes. Of course if you're wedded to OS X and you need something other than entry-level system performance, there is no other option. I guess that really makes your choice up for you.
I think I may have mentioned this before, but the CD MBP was released in spring and takeup increased into summer. The C2D notebooks came out in October. Might be something in that, just saying.
Running the CD and C2D aside, there's not a lot of difference in the temps. Both to me get unbearably hot (unless I turn up smcFanControl, in which case it gets very noisy) when trying to use any significant percentage of the notebook's performance in warm weather - and without smcFanControl several parts of the case get hot enough - on both variants - to potentially cause low-temperature burns.
I bought my 15" MBP core duo model in August last year. It has been perfect up until last week or so. I've noticed it gets very very hot. Very.

Anyway, the only thing I have done to my MBP in the last 2 weeks is upgrade the OS from 10.4.7 to 10.4.9. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Apart from that, my MBP still works very well. But damn, is it hot!

My MBP (Core Duo) has had HUGE overheating issues since the 10.4.9 update. I used to convert DVD's to MP4 using Popcorn while editing a bunch of photos. I could set up a dozen shows recorded from EyeTV to be converted and exported to iTunes. Now, I can barely get through a half hour show, and that's WITH a fan control program (smcFanControl). I hate to go through the effort of reverting back to the previous version, but I don't really see any other choice (unless Leopard comes out very, very soon...).

I checked my fans, and they didn't go above 4800. I'm going to install SMC fan tonight, and see if it helps.
What should I set the fans at?
