I find that circles are softer and much more inviting.

That looks serene to me. I don't like the actual icons, but those round shapes look absolutely calming.

I would never have thought that - but it looks stunning.
That Safari icon - 1000x better than the definition of Ugliness that we have right now.

I'm sure there will not be a lot of happy people if they switch to the circles, just look at the discussions here when MR changed its avatars to round shape.

After seeing what MacRumors went through after switching to round avatars? Highly doubt it.
Bad decision for avatars, it simply limits creativity and what can be done with the usable area. Not to mention it doesn't match the rest of the forum very well and leaves a lot more wasted space around the avatar.

I happily browse MacRumors with normal square avatars.

as long as they don't change how you move around the home screen to like you do on the Watch, I'm happy.

I really do think they need to add some depth to the icons on iOS now. If they had the icons in a similar style to Yosemite then I'd be happy because I think they look really nice!

I very much would like to see icons move to circles, would make the home screen look less cluttered as it does now.

I hope not. I still have lots of apps that have not been updated in a while. If Apple forces existing icons into a circle shape, it would look really bad. I already dislike having to wait until developers catch up with changes (too many apps still don't support the higher resolution of the iPhone 6/6 Plus). Developers would have to change their icons or hire designers to make new ones; why annoy them with this? And why even bother? It's completely arbitrary and adds nothing, plus using circles means that the canvas is smaller too, potentially leading to even less expressive icons. Let this be a thing of the Apple Watch, it's nice to have that difference.

I very much would like to see icons move to circles, would make the home screen look less cluttered as it does now.

Why is that? You don't control how icons look. They can be just as busy or poorly designed as they are now.

I said they would go for round icons in iOS 8 and I was wrong. A lot of icons of not all of them aside from app icons are already circle in iOS and have been since iOS 7, hence why I thought it would happen.
The watch interface or similar could work well.
I would prefer to have watch interface over just circular icons.
That's just my view though.

I suppose I could live with circles, but if they go for the watch interface, I'll absolutely switch to Android or Windows 10 phone.

If they just change the icons to circles and keep the current grid arrangement, I won't be too disappointed. If Apple changes the layout to match that of the Apple Watch, I won't be as pleased. The Apple Watch's layout works well for that device, but I can't see it working well on an iPhone (I have seen that jailbreak tweak, and it is horrendous).

The idea of circular icons is great, provided that they change some of them to fit. I'm all for this as long as they don't use the Apple Watch's layout...

Not sure how that would work out with third party apps.

Considering the iPod nano has had round icons for nearly 3 years and we haven't seen it on iOS yet, I really doubt this will happen with iOS 9 either.

On OS X, the safari icon looks great. It is round.

What is really odd in my opinion is the absence of "9" banners like the previous years when they showed "8" , "7" and "6". Does this mean a change in the naming of upcoming iOS versions?

They may switch to a name instead of a simple number.
They're getting close to number 10 so it may be a good time to change the name like they do with OS X. I find it easier to remember "mountain lion" instead of 10.8.
