Before the 6, people were using this form factor for many years and in fact had hung onto their 5s wanting a smaller phone, so to answer your question. Yes, I believe its something that will be viable for years to come - provided that form factor fits your needs as it stands now.

In addition, the SE is a powerful phone with outstanding battery life. The screen resolution is the drawback. I don't forsee Apple updating the SE anytime soon. You are correct, The form factor has me returning to the iPhone 7 when it is launched, as I was a previous iPhone 6s owner. The SE screen size is also my personal drawback, but none the less, solid phone, reliable and of course, Apple quality.

Yes.

Apple gives several software updates to its iPhones beyond three years since the 4s. Whatever length of time the 6s has, the SE should be the same since it is a 6s in a 5s body. The thing you need to ask yourself is if "4 is enough for you? Downgrading by 0.3 when you probably can adjust to 4.7 easily if you came from a 4.3 Android.

For my money, I would wait for the 7. I do prefer the 6s over SE. I don't care if the SE design looks better. I prefer ergonomics and practicality. I prefer the rounded edges of the 6 series and the "0.7 bigger screen. I already got accustomed to its size for over three years now. That's me though. Need to yourself what you really want.

As others have mentioned, processor-wise, the SE should be supported as long as the 6s is. I've still got unlocked 5/5c's that the family uses for international travel and non-gaming performance on iOS 9 is quite decent so that's fairly respectable performance from a 3-4 year old CPU.

Mind, going from 4.3" to 4.7", you'd barely need to make adjustments at all.

That said, which size to get is entirely a matter of personal preference. I have baby hands and I like the 4.7". My brother has average-sized hands and he likes 5.5". My parents both have bigger hands than me and my brother and they prefer 4". My mom, mostly because anything bigger wouldn't fit in her jeans pocket, my dad, I have no idea why.
