Later generations of iPhone’s are enough powerful to last 4-5 years easily before Apple screw up with software updates.

iPhone X is no special as you see iPhone 6S is still holding good on it’s forth year.

I think iPhone X is the longevity model because at a thousand bucks it’s got something to prove - that it’s not just flash in the pan overnight device that’s here today gone tomorrow but a real heavyweight that can pull it’s punches years down the line

I’m on iPhone X. No problems.

As mentioned above, the 8 has the same internals.

After thinking about it... I think that this years iPhone will have a surprise. It could actually be a redesign this year... if not. Then it definitely won’t be one for 2 years.
Apple won’t redesign a phone and add 5G to it in the same year. That’s not usually how Apple works. They’ll release a new design this year and then make 5g the new feature for next year. Or release 5g this year and then redesign next year. Or redesign next year and 5g the year after that..

Your theory is blown, as the iPhone 5 was a major redesign AND first with 4G/LTE.

Tho I certainly would love to see Apple give us a major redesign here in 2019, and then add 5G in 2020 for the "S" model; I'm traditionally an S-year upgrader, and planning to wait for next year regardless.

But I'm pretty sure that we're not getting a big redesign this year, from all indications.

There isn’t any redesign for the iPhone this year. Aside from the triple lens camera that’s rumored to be in place, smart phones don’t re-design on an annual basis. I mean, they all generally look the same, have the same physical characteristics, the only thing that really changes is the display or the back of the phone.

XS is. A12 is truly impressive in almost every way. A11, Just like A8, will become a bit underpowered. Though A11 would fare a tad better than A8 because of more RAM.

How will the A11 become underpowered? Absolutely ridiculous. The A12 is a very, very minor upgrade of the A11. It’s one of the smallest leaps in power generation to generation. The design is overwhelmingly similar just on a smaller process. And the A11 faring better because of more ram?Comparing the A8 to A11? Quoi??
You may need to research mobile architecture a bit more...

I have to agree, compare Geekbench Benchmarks for A11 vs A12 below. It is probably pound for pound the weakest increase in performance since the A7 to A8 days.

Single Core
A11 - 4215
A12 - 4798

Multi-Core
A11 - 10,161
A12 - 11,261

Graphics
A11 - 15,257
A12 - 21,212

Yes, well said.
Even beyond the benchmarks, the actual chipsets are very similar aside from the die shrink. What doesn’t make sense is suggesting the A11 has no longevity or will become underpowered. It’s still more powerful than pretty much every chip on the market outside of the A12. The A9 still holds up amazingly today, almost 4 years after it was released publicly, I’m sure the A11 will last just as long, if not longer.

The largest increase comes from the GPU and NPU. Apple claims 50% and 8x increases, respectively. The benchmarks roughly support these numbers.

It depends on what you want to do with iPhone. The A11 clearly isn't good enough for heavy ARKit 3 apps.
