1st and 2nd gen with the A12X and A12Z right? How are those holding up? Reason I’m asking if I get the M1 I should get support for a long time and it shouldn’t slow down as fast?
I would not buy an older generation. They will not support new features in iOS 16 so to save a few bucks you will lose out on features. The M1 pros are going to be discounted for a while most likely and even when the new model is released you will still be able to buy the older M1 on sale probably for an even better price.

Buying a Pro model ipad right now is not dumb but it depends what kind of user you are? If you are in the market for a "Pro" device then it tells me either you need the special features for a specific use case like content creation or art/drawing or just like certain features of the Pro like Promotion screen or quad speakers or thunderbolt or all of them. Most people who are willing to buy a Pro device want all the latest features and you might regret your decision to save a few bucks in a couple months when the new one's are released and have that one new feature or design you want and now don't have.

As you stated you could buy a pro on sale now and sell it later losing a couple hundred but then you are adding that onto the cost of a new device if you get the new model and you could have gotten a larger ssd or larger size for that money. If you are looking at deals then it tells me that cost is at least a factor in your decision.

So the best advice would be to wait. If you really need an iPad maybe it would be better to get a base model air on sale and then sell it when it is time for the Pro. That way you won't take as big a hit as the air already got it's update. Either way if you buy now you are going to lose money if you decide to get the newer model and tha5 is money you could have put toward the newer model.

If I were in the market for a Pro iPad and I could wait I would wait. I would want the M2 and any other potential features or design changes and $150 less on an already expensive device wouldn't matter to me. If you keep the device a while the extra cost is a wash and you will have the latest and greatest at least for a year.

No matter what you decide I strongly recommend that you don't buy anything but an M1 or better chip inside.

Good luck whatever you choose!
As a long-time 12.9 Pro user since 1st gen as my main device, all of this post seems like well thought out and balanced advice.

Will add that I'm on my second, 2nd-gen IPP after the first was replaced in warranty with the screen light burst issue on one edge. If you only want a kick-ass media consumption device, you could get away with a 2nd gen. Pro-motion is super and I routinely run 350+ open tabs and heavy use of 3-4 open apps with absolutely no hiccups. But you take on the risk of the 2nd gen screen issue appearing anytime, usu after about 2-3 years of steady use, which trashes the pro experience.

I say that because my 2nd unit just had that screen issue develop again in the last month. Really pissed. So started looking at options for a future replacement, was really gunning for M1 or M2. But after reading about the screen banding issue with M1 getting warm, the shine is really off iPad Pro for me. At these extortionate prices, I expect a pro device to be really robust with years of sustained performance. Hardware wise, the screens seem to be the weak link. I'm skeptical that the heat distortion will be better with the more powerful M2 trying to get future versions of Stage Manager to lift-off.

Now I'm starting to look at 4th gen, but feel like I would be dumb buying a pre-M1 version since Apple has so clearly marked a line in the sand linking new features to the M-class chips.

Walmart has a 512gb iPad Pro 11 on sale for $945.99. Original price for this model is $1099. Is it dumb to buy one right now?

The smart thing to do is wait just another month to see if we get another event, lots of rumours say we will and it's not unlike Apple to have a September then October event. If a new model is launched then that discount will likely be increased from its RRP as they clear stock.
However their is always that chance of you snooze you lose and they sell all their stock at their price.
Personally I'd wait to see what the new model brings.

I actually have seen the 1TB WiFi 2021 iPad Pro at about 300€ less than the Apple store price, around 250 less than the price I see in most other stores. Am seriously considering stop waiting for the new one, and by last year's model instead

That's actually a pretty decent discount, certainly worth considering.

Wait for the new one release. At that time, you will have more selections and better price (for the old one).

I found a 1TB 12.9 with cellular brand new on Swappa for $1329

Jumped on it because I didn’t think I’d see that price anywhere.

I‘ll add my voice. I just bought an iPad Pro 11. Granted, I was watching Best Buy open box deals and got almost $200 off on one (indistinguishable from new)… but I got one! I am not a power user, I have a MBP. So I bought it as primarily a consumption device and notepad. I figure that the way I use this device, it should last years. I really have no desire to use Stage Manager or my iPad for anything more than reading, note taking, some video watching, and the occasional Apple Fitness tool.

Once you’ve experienced promotion you can’t go back. I’ve tried and failed. And as much as I tried to tell myself otherwise, the iPad offers a much better consumption platform than the iPhone.

When you buy an iPad Pro 11" (current or future) you pay for one thing: LIDAR, so you can take 3D scan. All the rest are things which you can do with iPad Air 5. It also has the M1 processor. Last year everybody agreed that M1 was more power than one could really use on the iPad. So the M2 will be even more overkill. I don't think that anyone can mention any app which require more than M1. Remember that there are also limits for how much RAM an app can use in iPadOS.

The LIDAR is a fun feature with limited practical use with the current software options. (i have it on both iPhone and iPad). So go for iPad Air and keep the saved money for the next iPad in a few years. And get an Apple Pencil to work with all the graphic things you can do on the iPad.

No... You also pay for double the storage, Promotion, Quad speakers and more screen real estate, plus the option to get more storage tiers and RAM. And no, thanks to Memory Swap in iPadOS 16 now apps can use up to 16GB RAM.

Probably, but I just did with the $200 off sale. I figured that's as good as a pricedrop as we'll get.

If the new one updated 11inch has miniLED/oled and wifi6e 6ghz, then I have time to swap it out.

Is that a fact now? Is there some confirmation of this?
it has been since before summer

Virtual memory swap

iPad storage can be used to expand the available memory for all apps and delivers up to 16 gigabytes of memory for the most demanding apps.

100%.

I first bought an iPad Air 5 which I gave to me girlfriend. I now have a 11“ M1 Pro and when comparing them side by side scrolling through safari, it seems like the iPad Air 5 is 10 years old.
I loved the Air before I saw ProMotion in action but I could never go back.

Kind of curious, what storage capacity iPad Pro do you have? I was also thinking about getting the magic keyboard also just wondering if you had the keyboard also and if you like it or not.
I have the iPad Pro 3rd generation 11 inch, has 128gb storage and the magic keyboard. It basically has replaced my macbook Air for 99% of everything I do with it, and I really like the magic keyboard, even has backlit keys as well, and a trackpad so I find i do not get fingerprints all over the screen anymore

I guess we will find out tomorrow if something happens?

I just got an iPad Pro 11 myself. I do not plan on updating - I see that my Cellular 256GB iPad Pro 11 has a $480 trade in value. lol.

I have really missed an iPad and I'm really enjoying having a digital notebook and something I ENJOY reading on. I'm returning to reading hours a day - something I did not do when I did not have my iPad.

I do not plan on updating anytime soon.

I currently have a 4th gen iPad Air (non-M1) and am looking to upgrade to an iPad Pro 11". The current sales on the M1 models are attractive and I might go that route if the M2 models don't have anything special about them. I don't care about processor power or RAM as I am a light iPad user and iPadOS isn't good enough to be a productivity device where the processor and RAM are used.

So how come you’re upgrading from the air?

One reason: ProMotion display. Ever since it came to the iPhone, I've never looked at my iPad the same. I used to have a 2018 iPad Pro but needed to sell it for some cash back in 2020. I've missed ProMotion ever since, but having it on the iPhone really put it over the top.

Totally get it, got an 11” M1 Pro and love it. My 14 pro max should be here today as well
