I'm asking this for a discussion because I certainly get the feeling it's frowned upon among forum users.

I haven't done it to date, and I'm not sure I will. But I don't really see how it could be immoral after giving it admittedly minimal thought. It's free, apple have to sign it, and apple count as a measure of success adoption of new software, so they probably like it.

I'm genuinely open to persuasive counters to my 'position'

so you haven't seen the specs, what's new? sure they're expensive, but this is apple. meanwhile, check out the details, there are improvements, new features on all 3 new phones...

what were you expecting? apple is at the forefront of new tech (and not always the first). this is as good as the current moment gets...

I think you've nailed the problem here. They're saying it's just another tech company and you agree?

You still have to be enrolled in the public beta program though. Therefore you are still opting into Apple’s T/C. Installing the GM through the leaked links is a little different IMO because Apple is not getting anything out of you like they are with the developer and public beta platforms.

not sure what you're asking me. i mean, someday displays may float in the air in front of us, but the tech doesn't yet exist to do that, so no reason to expect it on an iphone. apple pushes ahead, as best it can. what were you hoping for in the new iphones??
 
how about...wrong? Are the stakes really so high to call installing legitimate software onto a smartphone "immoral"?

But isn’t doing something illegal considered immoral or unethical? Apple offers a free and “legal” way to do it. Installing a leaked version before the official release of the GM isn’t “legal”. That’s what I thinks being debated here. Installing it before Apple officially releases it to developers or public beta testers.

breaking Apple's EULA isn't "illegal"

go into a police station and tell them you installed iOS 11 onto your phone without Apple's blessing. I'll bail you out :)

It all comes down to what you consider the term for technically breaking the law is. Installing unauthorized software without the consent of the distributor is technically illegal. Trademark and copyright laws apply. Will Apple prosecute/press charges? Of course not. But it’s still an illegal activity.

I'm just saying dude, a deep dive into the morality issues behind installing software onto a phone a week or two before it's officially out is such a MR thing to do. It's not "immoral", it's not even "wrong", except by the most strict definitions of the word. If you had walked up to Tim Cook last week and showed him the GM on your phone he probably would have side-eyed you, that's it.

Where you get into an actual discussion is whether or not hosting or facilitating downloads of an unreleased software is wrong, which I believe it probably is.
 
I wouldn't install a leaked OS release, but there's certainly nothing wrong with signing up for the free beta program and install it that way. Apple, no doubt, would love to get as much feedback as possible.

I think it is the word he was looking for, but, he others may have been amoral when installing it. I think what he really means is "will I get caught if I did it?"

The 8 "isn't much better than the year before"???

Yea. Wireless charging. Such a nothing feature. LMAO... This feature ALONE is enough to warrant some to upgrade.
