Exactly.

I guess some people just don't like USB hubs. I sure don't.

In fact, I find it atrocious that my iMac has only 3 USB ports, while they managed to fit four in the new Mac mini.

I should get a wireless keyboard... :( but then I would lose the two USB ports on my Apple keyboard.

On second thought, I hate USB. I hate my iMac. I hate Apple. I hate computers. I hate technology.

Alright I'll give you a break, as I posted about your bitching, and think that wasn't nice.

But I just think there are a lot of threads that have people complaining about what Apple should have done. And that is getting a little old. I mean you are griping about how many USB slots there are on a desktop machine vs. a portable. How many USB devices do you take with you on the road? I would imagine a mouse maybe, and then something else. I don't think that is unreasonable.

Having 4 USB ports on a home system, you will likely have a lot more things to connect, and it is justified in my opinion to have 4.

I think what Apple does they do for a reason, and that people think they can do it better is fine, but it seems like very negative approaches when they do.

Personally I use more FireWire devices than USB with my Macs. Two USB ports are more than enough on my PowerBook since the only USB devices I occasionally plug in are my iPod Shuffle and a card reader. If you need to plug so many additional devices into a PowerBook or MacBook Pro then you should probably invest in a desktop machine not a notebook!

As for my iMac I've got zero USB devices as I recently purchased the wireless keyboard and mouse.

My EyeTV and external hard drive both use FireWire. I also use the FireWire cable for updating my iPod. I don't see the need for 4 USB ports on the mini. The iMacs have a nice balance with 3 USB and 2 FireWire 400 ports.

You asked the question. The answer is: it's just you.

Two USB ports is enough for 95% of people. USB2 hubs are cheap too.

It's not enough for me so i must be one of the 5% :)

It's amazing how much people will go to justify the lack of USB ports when more would definately be better.

EDIT: It's also amazinging how much you attack this guy for stating his opinion.

He asked a question to which he got some answers. I didn't slate him.

Erm back to the point :)....I personally need more than two USB ports on my pbook but again I'm probably one of the 5%.

Not many people who buy laptops need to plug in two midi controllers, a usb audio device (which can't go through a hub), a mouse etc etc. It's silly to moan about apple not catering for the minority. It's natural they don't.

Also to say it's bull is just overstating it and that, I think, is why the reactions above are as they are.

what are you smoking.

Now days most people use 3 USB ports at least.

1 for keyboard
1 for mouse
1 for printer

Btw dont tell me that the apple keyboard has USB on it because yes I know that but it is one of the few keyboards out there that does, Most dont.

So you sit with your laptop and have a mouse, keyboard and printer hanging off it? We are talking about laptops here, are you?

Just plug the above into a hub if you need all that stuff next time you're sat on the train :)

read the first post. The complaint is about the Mac Mini not laptops and most of this tread is about the mac mini and it only have 2 USB ports.
I was just point out to people saying only 3 USB ports are needed and used by most people on a desktop

Then there are people like me who are using 7 USB plus a firewire.

I suggest you take your own advice. The original post points out that the desktop Mac Mini has 4 usb ports (enough for all your peripherals above) and the MBP has just two. The original poster thinks this is unreasonable. I don't, I think that is a perfectly reasonable arrangement given how the two machines might typically be used.

well I feel stupid now.
I think that the that 2usb on the MB is still not enough. 3 usb ports is a much better number and more around the norm. because when someone is using it as a desktop replacement 3 USB ports is the number they need.

But for a laptop lets see for every day stuff I thinking 2 works just fine. 1 for Flash drive, 1 for mouse. As more and more things keep using USB the number of USB ports on the laptops needs keep growing.

EXACTLY!
i dont just use it as a portable laptop, i have the 17" pb, ipod, mouse, keyboard, usb speakers, isight, hard drive, flash drive, and card reader. yes yes, isight is firewire, and come are often removed, such as the flash drive, but i want t be able to leave things in. not worry about extra power cords and whatnot.
i dont want the size of the macbook to be larger, i just want more ports, you cant tell me that after removing the modem and fw800 they couldnt have added in 2 usb ports more. I am glad for everyone who had 2usb ports and is fine with it, its just not enough for me, and i would have expected more form a pro laptop. just as i would have been dissapointed if AE was not included, yea, i could bu an adapter, but who'd want to?
samce goes for pc 34 card, or even a pcmcia

Slapping more USB ports on the laptop would also encourage more people to slap USB devices on them and thereby more quickly drain the battery.

dude, people have been flaming apple for 22 hours straight right now. People are calling the new mini "unusable," mocking the hi-fi cruelly, and the scorn of the leather case is like nothing i've ever seen. Some posters are predicting the downfall of apple because of the inclusion of an integrated graphics chip on the mini.

So please, check your facts. People are jumping on this post because they see it as an unreasonable/nit-picky complaint. When this board thinks apple has done something wrong, it has NO problem saying so.

dont get me wrong, I love Apple. it is my favorite company. I own stock, i look forward to every single release, and upgrade frequently. i again was simply commenting on something that for my needs, they did not do correctly, and for gosh sake, if i cant post that here, then what to do. this is my most checked site and i RARELY complaing about anything. (on a side note, everyone should be allowed to complain over a 99 dollar leather case, thats the cost of the vaja cases which are so slick)

why do so many seem to think USB is the only connectivity option? What is the sense of having bluetooth and wireless periphery? Maybe, just maybe the thought is that since a lot of books are wireless, their compliment of auxilliary devices probably would be too.

I am not bitching, I am excersising my right to my opinion. not only that, but i belive that there have been recent grublings about this mac mini and its intel graphics, how do you find that any different. I am a laptop user, and i find that it is a pain to have to worry about a USB hub. just by adding 2 more usb ports, many small annoyences of mine would be fixed. got a problem with that? im sure more than one person at least would agree with me.
andreas

first lessening firewire ports, then the intel processor, now integrated graphics. at the end of the year, vista dualbooting. hell. it is morphing into a pc.

anyway. i would rather go with 2 firewire ports and 3 usb ports.

I have tons of USB devices too, and I use them all at once with my ancient TiBook by plugging them ALL into a cheap hub (you can get them for like 10 bucks now). Then it's only ONE USB cord to the laptop (so I still have one free!). It's much easier to go portable that way, too. Just take that one USB cord out, disconnect power, and you're good to go.

I think that the number of people who use 3 or more USB ports on the go are small enough that Apple shouldn't have to alter it's design for them. If you're part of that small group, there will very soon be ExpressCard/34 USB cards.

Well. I disagree. Two is ok but 3or 4 would have been really great.
I need one for the mouse(Dont know about you but I cant use any track pad for more than 15 min.)
Second for my 120gb Seagate external HDD. iBook has only 40gb and only half of that is actually available to the user. So to keep all my music and videos worth more than 60 gb I need an extra drive.
So that leaves me with no choice but to first eject my HDD then disconnect it physically if I want to use a card reader or usb logitech cam or Sony cybershot or handycam etc....
I dont mind swapping these devices but if there were more usb ports I could have saved some time and trouble.
But then even two is enough. And as you said, You can always get a cheap USB hub.

what I think hurts the USB ports on the Mac laptops is how they designed the screen lid and how it open. The design may look pretty but it end up destoring a ton or space that they could of put some of there ports in the rear of the computer.

Have the set up where they can use the back side of the computer things like vents, a USB or 2, Firewire and power normally all go there. Other things I have seen back there on others is things like the eithornet port sound can (I like that one on the side). Problem is in the design they cannt use th back side of the computer at all to store things like that. I personally would much rather have the power plug into the back of computer than the side.

Also that change would not change the thinkness of the laptop at all while closed. Just it would be a little taller while open because part of the screen is not going to dro down the back side of the laptop.

0.5 inches bigger? That's 50% larger assuming you mean thickness.
