I was just at an apple retailer the other day, and saw the old and new iMacs side by side.
I couldn't help but think "god the new ones look ugly in comparison".

Am I the only one?

I wouldn't be seeking advice on the Internet. You should see a doctor.

getting rid of the bezel was the best thing they could have done; as well as the all-in-one case.

the seam in the aluminum for the cover of the chin is kind of unsightly though.

They don't look much like the new ones. There is the alu bezel (gorgeous!) which changes the design completely, the border beneath the screen is thinner (more ugly!) and as you mentioned, the back, which is is much prettier in black.

You can't even tell the difference between two obviously completely different computer designs.
The only one who seems to be trolling, is you.

hmmmm ok my 2 p
in my opinion and i mean only in my opinion
the new iMac 27 looks nice , but
also in my opinion its just another all in one flat thing that only looks better then others ,
also in my opinion
the apple design is not any more what it was , after the imac g3 and g4 came nothing with the "wow' factor only giving it a couple inches more then others does not count as" wow "
they really had a design to fall in love with, and totally different to others

but that is my opinion and i dont force anybody to agree with my opinion
everybody is allowed to have its own taste and opinion

its like with everything
i also fancy the design of the old ford mustang of 1967 and i dont like the design of the 2009 model

Is it just me who thinks the new iMac is a downgrade in terms of design?

The current iMac design is leagues ahead of the previous incarnation, the previous design is good but if you compare it with the current, the old design looks cheap.

Hurrah, for the complete aluminium body :)

Personally I think the best iMac design was the "Lamp" style one.

The current one is second best in my opinion. Its a small refinement on the previous gen, yet it looks nicer in every way.

It's just a matter of preference. Some people like different things.

Exactly. It's obviously an entirely subjective matter and certainly nothing worth arguing over. Whether you think it looks ugly or beautiful you're 100% correct. It's not like you can post in here how you think it's ugly and then someone who reads it and loves the new design is going to change their own opinion. lol

In the previous models, the metal extension it served a huge role in housing components, but the size of it now suggests that everything could have been squeezed behind the LCD panel. The only reason the engineers kept it there is to keep it looking like an iMac rather than the ACD 24".

I do not understand where this is coming from?

For me, this is my first iMac after having owned Apple stuff for several years now. I would never, EVER have bought a previous gen iMac. I hated the huge chin, and the lackluster screens, especially by comparison to the 23" Cinema Display and the gorgeous 24" LED Cinema Display. Now the new 27" is IPS AND LED, it was a no-brainer...

Original Poster-

What are you comparing the new one to? The aluminum ones before it?

If so, no, I find the new ones MUCH more attractive. The old ones were a big square, which I found ugly, the chin and everything.

Now if you compare it against iMac G4, I agree, the G4 looks better.

Mixed feelings

I always wondered why Apple didn't put a silver Apple logo on the previous generation aluminum iMacs. I thought the polished black plastic logo was kinda ugly on the black matte back.

I love the look of the polished logo on the anodized aluminum back of the new iMacs, but prefer having the aluminum lip around the glass from the previous generation.

The last few new iMacs I came across, it looked as if the glass or the aluminum wasn't cut perfectly and there was a slight waviness where the aluminum peeked out around the glass.

Is it just me who thinks the new iMac is a downgrade in terms of design?

I'm afraid it is just you :(. Perhaps not the only one, but you've gotta be pretty rare. I never heard of anyone nor read anywhere anyone claim that the new design is inferior to the old. Doesn't mean someone somewhere in a village in Kazakhstan may not share your opinion, but it's pretty darn rare.

I think the new design is a 1000 times superior to the old. The old plastic in the back was cheap looking. The chin was depressing, like Jay Leno when he's not funny - and he's almost never funny. It looked like a clod. Now, the new one is big to be sure, but it carries its heft rather gracefully, like a nimble T-Rex, king of predators.

Best post ever. :D

Ha ahaa Lol. :D

The new iMac Looks way better, all iMacs looked good at their time, but once a new one comes out the older ones look.... old!, all iMacs are sexy, but the newest one is the sexyest till now

It's just you :) maybe you think that because you own one

Hey

The new iMacs have made me want to order a iMac in around 2 weeks. And i have been a windows user for atleast 14 years.

From Kehaan

Design is more than looks. I have an I7 sitting on my desk, and I like the way it looks, but no more than I liked the 24" iMac I sold to buy this one.

There are some aspects of the "design" (non-looks) that I don't like:

1. Getting rid of the firewire 400 port
2. Putting in an SD slot instead of some more universal slot that accepts a few more sizes. Such a "slot" could have been placed on the other side of the case or even under the screen.
3. Same old slow as molasses unSuperDrive
4. smaller, less prominent power switch
5. still no ability to change the size of screen fonts without lowering resolution
6. no acceptance of the concept that many pages are vertical, not horizontal, and that writers like vertical pages.
