of course they can track you. if you have to log onto the intranet, or the internet, or wateva, it will log it under YOUR user name. it will be stored whereever they store it and they will have readily avaliable access to it. so yea.
Yeah, that won't work if you are on a school network. But in any event, unless they are either a) really, really anal about any site that has anything to do with p2p or piracy (and it's usually only the religious private schools (regardless of denomination) that get upset about that - they have, as a whole, been the group that has been most cooperative with the RIAA most other public or private institutions are not going to turn over their students records to have them potentially served with subpoenas - it's just bad business (and higher education IS a business)) or b) she's visiting flat-out illegal sites (read: child pornography) -- it won't matter, no one who has access to monitoring her activity is going to care, like AT ALL.
I used to do syst-admin work at my University - and yeah, we could technically monitor any of the traffic happening on the network, but the process to actually locating what MAC address was associated with what individual was really, really complicated to do just out of being nosy. I mean, we only cared if one of the kids in the dorms/University lofts were trying to run a server off of our backbone (and in the dorms, that backbone was shared with Georgia Tech, making it more their problem than ours - we still had to ban or threaten to ban them from the Internet, but the dorm network didn't affect the rest of the University). For P2P - you give the kids in the dorms/lofts lectures about how it's "bad" and "illegal" and then you go back to the admin office and fire up the same programs and take full advantage of using a very, very powerful network.
