As soon as I can stop using my gmail email address for my Apple ID, I'm deleting my Gmail account.

It's the only reason I still have it! Come on Apple...

Not ideal but I started using an old Outlook account, as I'm in the process of moving everything away from Google.

I'm now using Outlook as my secondary email account (replacing Gmail) and also as my Apple ID.

This has got to be one of the most ridiculous things ever, having to use a competitor's email. I know it's been said, but this has been a pet peeve of mine. I don't get why it isn't a priority to change this.

Agreed...the issue -- as has been said many times before -- is that should your @icloud.com account get locked then you have no way of getting in to sort things out...

To me -- and what I don't understand -- why not do the opposite...why not let users use an @icloud.com as their primary e-mail for their Apple ID provided they use another e-mail address as their secondary e-mail account...

To me this makes much more sense but hey, I don't have a say as the consumer..

That's one way to do it. I don't have an Outlook account so I guess I'm stuck (unless I make one).

Hopefully Apple will "fix" this. It seems kind of odd considering how much Apple want people to be fully into the Apple ecosystem, leaving other service providers behind (e.g. moving away from Google Maps, competing with DropBox with iCloud drive).

I believe you can have your @icloud.com account as your primary account, if you start out that way. The issue is that you can't do so after the fact.

The explanation is usually that the @icloud.com account is also an Apple ID in it's own right, and in order to make it the primary for your actual Apple ID, Apple would have to merge Apple IDs, and they (allegedly) can't / won't do that.

I think that rather than being an account retrieval or security issue, it's more a data management / programming issue they simply haven't addressed, and maybe don't intend to.

Thing is many new users will feel more secure signing up with an email they already use. They will believe they can change it later (like so many other services). Apple really are scewing things because the competition then gets access to all the purchases. They can use this to plan new apps, services, see trends etc its like allowing your enemy into your war room.

Appreciate the added insight...

Agree, regardless of the reason they should find a way to allow a user (who did not start with an @icloud.com as their primary e-mail address) to make their @icloud.com e-mail address their primary e-mail address...

At the very least, Apple should allow a one-time migration of content/purchases.
You can't create an Apple ID with an iCloud email address* let alone change an existing Apple ID to an iCloud email address. So migration not even feasible yet.

*Or rather, you can't just create a new Apple ID that comes with iCloud account name of your choice, you need an existing non-iCloud email address first, which becomes your Apple ID. Under these circumstances, it's really clear they don't intend to compete as an email provider.
