Is it really glass?

I know... take it off... hit it will a hard piece of metal (maybe a hammer). Make sure to hit it as close to the center of the panel as you can.
If it shatters then it's glass but if you just make an ugly dent in it then it's probably just plastic.

I was just thinking the same thing! The power was out last night, and as I was fumbling around in the dark I accidentally knocked into the screen while trying to unplug the imac (in the event of a power surge). And I was like wtf?? That felt like plastic. 
You ingrate morons! Apple endows the most sophisticated screen covers we have seen to date, and you don't even notice.

Haha so thats why theres a £50 graphics card in it, they needed to level the costs of having that kind of display cover

But really. I'd be pretty sure it is glass. Apple said it is glass. They wouldn't lie to us! What more proof to do you need. Trust Steve. His word is his bond.

It is...sort of. It's SiO2 (according to the Apple site), and that's glass...but i dont think its pure glass...

If you look at the article for glass on Wikipedia it says it is SiO2.

Saying something is glass is kind of relative isn't it? There are different types of glass, but that does make one glass and one not glass. You can't say glass type A is pure glass and glass type B isn't pure. Being "pure" is a relative term comparing one type with the same type. That sample1 type A glass is purer than sample2 type A glass.

good point... i just meant that they probably mixed something else in it...it definitely doesnt feel like glass from what ive felt.

So who wants to guess what Apple charges for a replacement "glass"?
My guess is $79.00. When I removed mine, I kind of 'thumped" it and it acted like glass (sounded like). It is WAY thinner than I thought it would be though.

I used to work in this medium. Take a brand spanking new razor blade and try to score the surface. In an unobtrusive area of course. If it is indeed glass, there will be no mark. If plastic of some other substance, you've begun the process of marking your territory and I would suggest your signature or initials would make a nice personalizing (and) 'anti-theft' feature. Of course if it's coated glass, all bets are off. Godspeed.

Yep the official repair kit for the iMac is a pair of white gloves and two suction cup grip things.

Here is a test, if it feels like you are trying to pick up a 27'' TV, then it's probably glass
CRT monitors are such a pain in the butt to pick up since they front is a thick chunk of glass right in the front.
