I had my MBA for about 3 weeks now. And heres my opinion.

MBA 1.6/80

Battery: Takes about 2.5~3 hrs from 0% to 80% and another 2 from 80% to 100%

Heat Issues: None. I use Safari, Keynote, Pages, QT (watch AVI or iTunes movie that's about 700MB), iTunes and iPhoto. (it stays around 50~65 and sometimes upto 69)

Fan: Usually it stays 2500rpm unless I start watching movies or do heavy downloads (over atleast 300MB). It will go upto 6200rpm, and takes about 2 minutes to be back to 2500rpm after finishing the movie. However I never have actually problem watching movies (No freezing, No lag)

Wireless: I got my Time capsule 4 days ago and it's been working fine. 802.11n is really fast and rarely it ever get disconnected.

So basically I have little problem with the fan issue but I think I will deal with it and hope Apple fix by some kind of software update. I mean unlike some people I see on the forum, my MBA never freezes or shuts down one of the cores.

For my personal needs, I would only get the MBA to replace my aging MacBook, but that won't be for at least another year. Hopefully by then the SSDs will have more capacity for less money.
I don't think the MBA has any more problems than any other notebook computer made by Apple. You should be safe.

I get the sense that the heat issues may occur to a greater extent with the 1.8/SSD. Is this true?

Can't speak for anyone else, but I have had no problems with my 1.8/SSD, which I purchased on February 8th. Just checked and the serial number indicates that it was manufactured in Week 3. I've run YouTube videos on it but haven't watched any full-length movies yet, and I've done normal activities such as email, web surfing, website forum participation, etc., with no issues whatsoever. My MBA is sitting on my lap right now and has been for the past hour and a half -- the underside is warm in the upper left side area only, and it's still quite comfortable and tolerable, unlike my two-year-old Core Duo 15" MBP, which can get really sizzling and which I never use on my lap!

I've run the SMC update and got the response that my machine was up to date, so just shrugged that off.... Since I've had no problems I am assuming that maybe this update was actually administered in the factory and that is why my machine didn't need it? Whatever. No problems here and I'm thankful for that!
