I want to jailbreak my UK iPhone on 1.1.2, and so I am told I have to downgrade, however there have been a couple of comments around, something about boot loaders, saying that it is for some reason a big no no to downgrade a UK iPhone.

These claims were no substantiated or explained, but I'm a little apprehensive. Can someone give me the all clear?

And generally, are there any problem associated with jailbreaking and upgrading back to 1.1.2?

I have no idea what boot loaders are, but I'm only looking to jailbreak it :D I basically just want ApolloIM and ScummVM on there, those two and I'm DONE :)

You're right it's hard to make head nor tails of how safe it is, some say completely, some say not at all, and people often don't specify whether they've done it on an EU phone or not.

Is there not one person on the entire site that has a UK iPhone and has tried this downgrade/jailbreak/upgrade routine?

Not ONE?!

lol.. My mate jailbroke his UK iPhone. Pretty much you have to follow the instructions at http://jailbreakme.com/1.1.2/, but you need to find some extra files that contain the Visual Voicemail and EDGE/GPRS Settings for O2, and if you're running iTunes 7.5 you need some random files from the older iTunes.. Thats all I could get out of him for now, but when he's online at a real PC (he was on his iPhone, ApolloIM!) I'll get the details from him and repost.

Time for some food...

wrboyce: *PLEAD* with your mate to put down the steps in a tutorial. I've scoured EVERY iphone forum looking for confirmation of a jailbroken 1.1.2 uk o2 iphone with no success!

Thought I had it sussed just using the conceited package but now its sounding like the o2 EDGE settings and visual voicemail will be up the left if I do it :(

Cheers!

When i try to downgrade 1.1.2 to 1.1.1 via the iTunes Alt+Restore method. I get an "Unknown error occurred" message. The phone then stays black and doesnt appear to do anything.

Why is my downgrade not working??

Confirm him damn it! For the love of god someone confirm him! ;(

I am preparing to try.. Want to ensure I have independence/iphuc working on my mac before I stick my phone in paperweight mode!

From reading the instructions, it doesn't seem that you're doing much drastic, and an iTunes Restore would probably fix all.

alexdudman: Think thats to be expected from what i've read - does it then go to the connect to itunes screen?

After the error the iPhone screen stays black until I hold down the sleep wake button a couple of times, after doing this the phone powers up in 1.1.2. I haven't any idea as to what I am going to do next. Hopefully there will be some update tomorrow when I look here and all four corners of the Internet

wrboyce: Sounds good! Let us know how you get on...
Take it you haven't had the same problems as alex?

I dunno where I messed up the first time but I got to the last step and had to start again. I am running installer.app on my 1.1.1 uk iphone at the minute (with no gsm signal)

updated to 1.1.2 and jailbreaking now.. should be done in 5 mins.. will post solution shortly.

Just one query - when in 1.1.1 what version of itunes did you use to activate the phone? I only have a PC here, no mac - so no independance to try...

sounds great! can you call, access visual voicemail, youtube app etc? I don't want to lose those features :p
