DenniZ: Just jailbreak... if you don't have an o2 activated iphone (i.e. signed up) there's no point trying this yet... If you are looking to unlock an OTB o2 iphone I've read elsewhere people have had success returning to 1.0.2. Have a look round the iphone elite forums

ahh thanks for clearing that up , anyways yes you can basically activate your iphone when in 1.0.2 FW although the iPhone still requires you to use a 02 sim card but doesnt have to be the one with that 18 month contract. Although i think that could be for the american iphones , soo confusing lol.
Ho hum back in standard 1.1.2. Dunno how to get round the error 1015 after flashing fw 1.1.1 in windows

Just ignore the 1015 error and continue... Once you're back into 1.1.2 (normal) run windows.bat that came in the .zip from conceitedsoftware
Sorry should have said I can't even get 1.1.1 working to install the okToPrep app - phone just sits in connect to itunes mode and I don't have a mac to try independence...Anyone know what the windows version of it is?

Got the 1015 error after going to 1.1.1 and don't have a mac to run independence.. gonna stay in 1.1.2 unjailbroken till I can work out how to get round this. leaving it till another night - if anyone else manages it post here how you activate after 1.1.1 downgrade! cheers!

I didn't use independence the second time round (the jailbreak failed the first time). Just re-activated my iPhone in iTunes.
Downgrade, activate in iTunes, jailbreakme.com, octoprep, upgrade to 1.1.2, activate, run conceitedsoftware's jailbreaker, rejoyce.
What does the activation process in iTunes mean? Is there a screen that says activate this iPhone or do you have to go through the contract process again?
I did everything, installed oktoprep, connected to iTunes and updated, now I'm back in 1.1.2 and running conceited's jailbreak gives me this:

EDIT: Forget it, it's too much like hard work, I'm waiting for jailbreakme.com to be the one and only step for 1.1.2.

WTF do I do now?!?! My jailbreak failed so I can't use SSH for the fix.
EDIT: I get the message "Could not activate EDGE" when I try and do anything with edge (mail etc.), can someone diagnose? Is this related?

If you're missing the readline library (i.e. iPhuc doesn't work for you), you can download it here http://rapidshare.com/files/61509655/opt.zip.html . Extract the zip to your Desktop, then in Terminal, type "sudo cp ~/Desktop/opt/local/lib/libreadline.5.2.dylib /opt/local/lib". You may need to sudo mkdir the /opt/local/lib folder first. Intel Macs only!

Findings from jailbreaking a UK o2 activated 1.1.2 iphone, cheers to wrboyce for the support!
My setup: Windows XP, ITunes 7.5
What I used:

1.1.1 and 1.1.2 iphone firmware restore files (google for them)
1. In itunes connected phone and held shift & clicked restore - selected 1.1.1 firmware file. Flashed and finished with error 1015. Phone displayed connect to itunes picture.
2. Got the phone to boot into 1.1.1 with ibrickr using this method:
* Run iphoneinterface in a Command Prompt window.
* You should see an "r_recovery" prompt.
* Enter "setenv auto-boot true", "saveenv", and "fsboot" (each on their one line).
* Wait for iPhone to reboot -- may take a minute.
3. My SIM was locked and couldn't activate - removed SIM and PIN unlocked it in another phone. Popped it back in.
4. Activated phone in itunes. Phone is now on home screen in 1.1.1 Note: No GSM connection at this stage.
5. Visited jailbreakme.com in safari and attempted to install Installer.app. Didn't work the first time so I had to switch phone off and back on again and retry. Worked this time. Should display progress when its working, before I rebooted it just quit back to home and nothing happened.
6. Installer now on home screen. Installed OktoPrep (in tweaks)
7. Ran ITunes shift-clicked *UPDATE* and choose 1.1.2 firmware. Waited. Itunes activates phone.
8. Running conceited jailbreak - windows.bat. Flashing firmware and installing ssh. Takes a while!
9. Hrmm looks like it didn't work on home screen and no installer. Turning phone off and on. It worked! Now in 1.1.2 and jailbroken VV and EDGE are broken however.
10. Used putty to ssh into iphone. Ran the following to get o2 edge and visual voicemail working:
rm /var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.carrier.plist
cp /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreTelephony.framework/Support/O2_UK.plist /var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.carrier.plist
rm -f /var/root/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

Phone is fully functional in 1.1.2 with visual voicemail confirmed working and GPRS certainly works (no EDGE where I live - damn o2!).
Hope this helps someone out here or gives them the guts to try it too
