The SE3 is three years old now. It will likely be supported by another three iOS versions, so until fall 2028. Similarly to your SE1 now, you’ll likely be able to get by for another two years, so until 2030. The alternative, as has been pointed out, is the 16e, which would probably get you to 2032 or 2033. Besides the price difference, it’s more a question of preference: OLED vs. LCD, Face ID vs. Touch ID, Home button vs. swiping, on-device AI capabilities vs. none, size, weight, camera, etc.

Oh that's good then and 64GB (less usable) for a free iPhone really isn't a big deal. If you end up finding no use for the free or almost free prepaid carrier iPhone you can always trade that in at Apple for a pair of Airpods at no extra cost.

in my personal opinion, you are much better off just going for a 16e at this point, especially coming from a first generation SE.
I understand it’s significantly more expensive, but it’s also a question of keeping a phone for 2-3 years before having to go through this all over again, or getting the 16e, which should reasonably get updates until 2032 at least, and likely security updates into 2035.
it’s also a question of battery, the new 16e has a bigger battery than even the base 16.
Meanwhile any SE3 you can buy at this point is likely going to have a battery manufactured years ago, if it’s used a degraded battery, and because of the smaller capacity, the batteries is likely to go through cycles significantly quicker.

and then there’s the smaller stuff that probably won’t matter as much right now, but could someday, the OS itself is clearly not optimized for home button packing products anymore, I’ve read complaints of just strange UIs in third-party applications that are clearly meant for newer, bigger phones that just come off as bizarre on the SE3.

TLDR: if all you are interested in is paying the smallest amount of money possible today, obviously the SE3 will get the job done, but you’ll likely be right back here in three years or less looking to spend even more money to upgrade that SE3. meanwhile, the 16e is significantly more expensive upfront, but you are likely to not have to think about replacing it at least until the early/mid 2030s.

Of course the 16e is the better phone, but my SE 2nd Gen is still running fine, so I guess 3rd Gen will work OK for some time.

the SE3 will get the job done, but you’ll likely be right back here in three years or less
And that's three years (or less, but with 3 more iOS versions it's going to last 3 years) of using a plenty fast iPhone essentially for free with that prepaid carrier deal. I see only upsides because instead of getting that gimped 16e now you can save the money and get something newer in 2-3 years like an iPhone 18e or last year's 17 or even an older 16 on yet another prepaid carrier deal.

If OP could get a really good deal on a 15 Pro or 16 then I'd say get that and enjoy that much better iPhone experience. But the 16e? It's a faster iPhone 13 that trades Magsafe for a larger battery. Nothing to write home about. It's a solid device but in my opinion it isn't worth even 50% of the MSRP. There were really good deals right as it launched last year with prepaid carriers almost handing these out like candy but that was a one-time promotion.

You can for sure call me biased as I do own a SE 3 but that means I know exactly what it's good at and what not. Battery life is noticably better than on my older SE 2 (let alone the original SE for sure), performance is noticably better (apps open almost as quickly as on my 15 Pro whereas the SE 2 has an extra second or two of delay depending on the app), the display is obviously trash though. It's not even the LCD panel that bothers me so much and more the size and how the Control Center comes up from the bottom as well as how laggy it is (the panel can do 60Hz but the animations are janky like setting your computer monitor to 30Hz).

Would I pay for a new one in 2025? Absolutely not. Would I find a use for a free one? Yes!

Really OP got nothing to lose with taking advantage of this prepaid carrier deal. If it turns out to be crap go trade it in for a pair of Airpods with Apple and get the 16e.

Well i chanced upon a brand new and sealed 64gb se3 recently for $240 unlocked. Got it as my secondary phone as I love the form factor and nostalgia.

Thinking I may get the apple care too, who knows Apple may give you a 18e or whatever latest budget iphone that year when you want to change the battery since se 3 is history.

If you can get a brand new one for less than $250 unlocked, i say go for it and enjoy that form factor for at least till 2028, no regrets for you aren’t going for the bells and whistles. Get apple care too!

Well considering you are using an SE1 and have no desire or need (at this point) for a larger device costing £££, then an SE3 at the right price would do you well!

Slightly larger screen but still with a small form factor, 6 generations newer chip - A9 vs A15, so it’ll have far better performance! Better battery life (depending on battery health) and another 2-3 years of support left in it yet, so no worries about app support and security.

Had me confused with „first gen iPhone“.
Sorry to hear that you’re forced to depart from your original SE, such a good device. I myself don’t have much use for it anymore as well, probably mostly because of the swelling battery.
Hope this thread guides you well.

Basically if you really want a small iphone with the home button the SE3 is your last chance. Otherwise I would look at a different newer model.
