I am in the same boat.
I am considering two options:

Get an used 13" on Craigslist or somewhere else to keep me going until the updates hopefully on Sep/Oct.
or
Get the Macbook 12" that was recently update and sell it when the MBP's comes out. The reasoning here is that would be easier to sell it later and get a good return on it. Yes, it's underpowered in comparison to MBPs but I will used mostly for UI design with Sketch app that doesn't require too much power.

i considered that but man, 12inch screen and a mobile processor, would take forever to do video editing and rendering . UGHHHH decisions decisions

Yes, video editing is tough. Like I said for my needs would be ok. Your best route might be the used 13" MBP and then sell it in few months. Sure you'll lose some money on the process but if you are using for real work, I am sure you can recoup it easily.

I'm currently in the same boat. How much depreciation would I incur if I were to buy a 15" now and sell before the supposed event in September? 10 to 20%?

I am going to buy one now and just hold onto it for a bit. Apple seems to be having some teething issue after major hardware changes. Since this is a work machine I cannot afford to have it be wonky at the wrong time.

If you need a computer now your decision is made. The 2015 MBP 15" is still one of the best laptops out there. For example: http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/laptop-brand-ratings

If, on the other hand, you belong to a techno ApplePhile cargo cult then by all means keep facing west and pleading for their next offering.

And then be prepared to wade through ponderously long threads about how Apple has lost its way and become too iOSy and that it doesn't have ports every computer should have and a graphics card that is four months old and it won't run Leopard and how could Apple be so awful and, well you know.

Besides, you could always sell it. While I'd expect some drop in price I've seen used MBP's going used now for only about 20-25% under their list. So say in the US you'd lose $500 or so in value, depending on specs, which depending on the length of ownership (say 6 mos while everyone at Macrumors finds out what's wrong with the latestgreatest) might not be a bad deal.

I just bought one, and one factor was that I didn't know what the new one would bring. I wanna SD slot, for example. I don't need much smaller, which is why I'm going 15" anyway. I want something with a track record, although MBPs generally are exactly cube risky. I actually need to do stuff, so features I might not even need and incremental speed boosts are meh.

BTW Adorama and B&H seem to have the best deals right now, better than Apple refurb if you take tax into account, and maybe even with that depending on your location.

If you need one now buy it now. Personally, given the high price, and technology in the current Macs, its hard to justify - at least for me. Macs have always been wonderfully designed machines with some really good components, but with MBPs still chugging on broadwell, and so many other competitors on skylake (for less money), its hard to justify the purchase - at least it is for me.

Sort depends what have to use. If you have other system to use one can wait. I am down to a 2009 mac mini as my only mac, so I am buying

Considerably more depending on where your located. 2016 will very likely be a new design, not just a spec bump, which will devalue the current model a good deal more. Buy one now and keep it for the long term, or wait.

Q-6

You can book it.... No new design and only a minor spec bump....

No guarantees it will come in September. And the rumours from the supply chain suggest the 13" may come first in any case (which is similar to previous MBP redesigns where one size goes first).

Unless you absolutely need a computer right now for work, in a life or death situation, save yourself the money and wait for the new release. Otherwise you'll be paying $3k for last year's system. Even then, you can just buy a used or a refurbished system which could hold you over until the new one is released. If you already have a system, then just wait

I just bought a brand new 2015 15"/2.5GHz/1TB/R9 370x with 3yrs AppleCare for $2350 shipped. Too hard to pass up. If the re-design really wows me, I'll sell and upgrade. Either way, I'll have a machine that will last me a long while.

Maybe you missed my deal? I got the same computer for $800 less than he did.

Top of the line 15inch rMBP for $1500 barely used with Apple Care on Craigslist last month. Even when the new ones come out I would have still gotten a great deal. Just do that.

Amazing. I just ordered a new one from Amazon and it was $2200. Better than $2499 from Apple, but not like these deals. But since I am buying through my company at least it is a write off.

Yes it was, and in 2008 the 15" unibody came before the 17". However, the chassis leak and hinge orders suggest this time the 13" is coming first, and that would not be surprising since I would guess that this size now sells considerably more than the 15".

Considering the timeline on AMD`s new portable dGPU`s, I tend to think Apple will split the MBP release initially favouring the 13" nor would this be the first time for this strategy.

If so, Apple are clearly looking to reduce sales of the MBP ever further...

You should wait 29 years from now and you'll get 18 core cpu's and 3 dedicated gpu's and it can read your mind!

Please.... That's only 4 updates from apple at this pace. The competition will have those specs while we have 6 cores and integrated graphics , and cost more
[doublepost=1466066180][/doublepost]OP, wait till the new ones come out , looks like a new design.

So i was hoping for a new 15" macbook pro at WWDC but clearly did not happen.

Is it still worth buying?

My other option was buying the cheaper 13" retina and selling it when HOPEFULLY the new macbooks get released in october, but seems so far away.

but i always loed the 15" for the screen size, ....and nicer speakers and dedicated graphics card for faster rendering for videos

what would you guys do?

the 15" model i want comes to 3000 dollars with taxes and everything. plus the fre beats headphones which i could sell to knock off maybe 200.

$3k is a lot of money to spend on that laptop, especially since it seems you would sell and upgrade to the newest anyway. Last summer, I bought the previous year's version from BH after the lame 15" update. It was $600 or so off.

i dont ever recall apple releasing macs at september, just october?

but regardless, like I NEED a macbook right now lol

If that's 100% true, and you will 100% sell it for a newer model when it's released, buy the cheapest option you can live with. If you buy that $3k option, you'll take a massive resale hit when you try to sell it.

Or wait a year and let the early adopters deal with the UBS C, Skylake, etc issues. These days it seems it takes Apple a year or so to get things worked out.

3000 for a laptop? Honestly, coming from an apple user, I would find a cheaper alternative. I don't think MBPs are worth it because their dGPU is pretty underwhelming, and generally the computer is overpriced

Also, 15inch MBPs with dGPU have a history of graphics distortion and display flickering. Just not worth it in my opinion.

I did a 360* and returned to the Windows market... I went from a 2014 MBP Pro with dGPU (massive damage, even a toughbook would've had a hard time ) -> 2015 MBP Pro with dGPU (impulse buy/returned after no skylake refresh news) -> Lenovo Thinkpad P50 (current).

** I've had this unit for 2 weeks but only 1 week as a DD **

The downsides of the P50
- Fairly big and heavy compared to a MBP
- Poorer battery life. I had to try hard to get ~5 hours by doing things like lowering brightness, closing applications etc.
- Windows 10 scaling is good but app scaling support isn't as good as OS X
- I wish the 4K screen was just a little brighter
- I wanted more future ports and less legacy... USB-C & Thunderbolt
- The majority of the ports are at the back so you need to get up or turn the notebook around to plug in things.....
- I had to get rid of my multi monitor stand because of the docking station (it raised the notebook and the stand couldn't go higher)

The upside of the P50
-- The 4K screen is very nice
-- Due to all the internal ports I haven't carried around any adapters.
-- You know the unit can take a beating
-- The M2000M is at Nvidia 960m performance so you can play the latest games & the quadro unlocks features in certain CAD softare
-- The keyboard is better to type on and the numpad actually came in handy. I started using it to write out IPs, telephone numbers, excel work etc.
-- They have a excellent docking station solution which I love due to its convenience
-- I could use Firefox or Chrome without the battery hit like on the MBP.
-- Easy to service
-- ECC memory supported on the Xeon models

What I miss about the Macbook Pro
-- The awesome ~8-10 hours battery life without even trying (modifying brightness setting, turning off unused apps etc)
-- Thinner and lighter
-- Brighter screen with 16:10 aspect ratio
-- Touchpad
-- OS X experience
-- Status symbol

I'm from Canada and was able to get a Thinkpad P50 + 512GB 950 Pro NVMe SSD + Thinkpad Docking Station for around the pre-tax price for a brand new 2015 dGPU 15" MBP.....
