I'm thinking of getting an iPhone w. 16GB since Orange here in Austria is giving a good deal - 250€ for the unit and 44€/month (incl. Data Plan w. 3GB) and only 12 months contract.

Just not sure if I should wait for a better unit to come, since according to the Buyer's Guide an update should come in 38 days.

What do you think - wait or get it?

A new iPhone won't come out until June. I don't know what the statute of limitations is on buyer's remorse but I think 8 months should give you enough time to be satisfied with your purchase.

38 days? No way. The only real upgrades to the iphone have been once per year in June or July. The buyer's guide is distorted by the fact that the 16 GB iphone 2G was introduced mid-cycle, but that wasn't really a new model, just a higher capacity. And even that is unlikely to happen with the 3GS.

Bottom line is there won't be a new iphone until next summer, so IMO if you want a 3GS, buy it now (especially with only a one year contract!).

They only have 1 year contracts now?

Also, I'd wait for the next iPhone if I were you. I'm waiting for a design refresh before I get one. I want Apple to sort out the manufacturing flaws that plague the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Specifically the cracks, misaligned bezels, dust under glass and light leaks. On another note, they should switch to OLED screens.

They don't have 1 year contracts but they do often allow people who have been with them for a while and paid on time (and most likely didn't cause them a ton of headaches) to upgrade early. I am often offered early upgrades.

To the OP, I was able to upgrade in July. I opted not to at that time and now that it's already nearing the end of October I figure I'd just kick back and see what happens. My phone is out of warranty and if it does die I'll just pick up a 3GS (if before June).

I'm getting mine this Sunday, I think it's a really good time to get one IMO.

Nah, I'd wait for the annual iPhone refresh come June/July.

If they are really updating the line in June I guess it's not such a bad time to get it now. I could get the new one as soon as my contract runs out next november, which is fine with me. I was just worried they might upgrade it in a month in which case I'd really bite my ass...

Specifically the cracks,

what cracks? can you see any cracks here? shesh, talk about putting people off.

It's gone flying off a car, lost count on the times it's slipped out my shirt pocket and finally someone phoned and it vibrated off the desk... seems tough enough to me :p

Edit: actually i think you can just see a tiny scratch, probably from when it was in my pocket with some keys.

I think he means the casing cracks.

I think it's time you looked for a new phone. The iPhone obviously isn't what you want. It makes no sense to me when somebody says "I'm waiting for this product to be upgraded into something I actually want".

What happens is June when they introduce then next iPhone and have decided to keep costs low by using the same casing again? Will it be "I'm waiting til June of 2011 when Apple finally gets their **** together and gives me what I want!"?

And as far as the manufacturing issues, it's not like they're just going to go away with the next iteration. Hell if you get what you want and they change the casing design, we're probably going to see new build issues AND more of the ones we're dealing with now.

Spaz do you even own an iPhone

I didn't see the door hit you on the way out :p

OP

I think the longer you wait, the more buyers regret you are going to have

If you buy the phone now, you will have a usable phone for about 7-8 months before the next refresh comes out.

If you want the phone buy it now

IMO it is a very good time to buy a 3GS...The next update is 8 to 9 months away...
I got mine here in France for 229€ with illimited SMS/MMS/Internet & 4hours communication a month. it costs me 55€ per month.

I love my iPhone! It's only an iPhone 3G, but with 2.2.1 it's really a great phone. Also, I just "hope" they change the design in the next iPhone… heck they improve their designs all the time. Remember the first generation iPhone? Remember the first generation iPod touch? Designs change and I'm hoping they're taking the feedback left by their users and improve the design and quality to have an even BETTER product. Get what I'm saying?

I'm thinking the next iPhone will not look like the iPhone 3GS, but it will have similar internals as the 3GS (sort of like the first generation to 2nd generation iPhones did)

I wouldn't be any happier with a different brand phone. Remember when we didn't have mag-safe adapters and latches in the PowerBooks? These things were things that used to break or be unreliable on the PowerBooks… that's why they figured out a better way to design them so they didn't need latches and the magsafe cord helps from accidentally knocking your MacBook to the floor or breaking the cable.

There is always areas to improve on. I can't imagine that the iPhone 3G design is the perfect design.

My iPhone is perfect to me (minus OS 3) and I'm not going to upgrade until I'm happy with the quality. I tried upgrading to the iPhone 3GS and the quality was worse than my iPhone 3G, so I returned it. I'm not going to go for worse… only better.

That's a good price. I checked again, the Price for the unit would be 299€, 39€ per month incl. 1000min, 1000SMS and 1 GB data. 12 month contract.

BTW, is 1GB enough for the iphone? I wouldn't use tethering, just use it on the iPhone for mails, facebook, some online games, navigation.

I can't believe you had that bad of luck with the 3GS. I've had two of them and my first was damn near perfect with a TINY light leak in the upper left but the one I'm using now is completely perfect. I'll agree with you that OS 3.0 and above has been horrible but to be honest I'm not sure I would want to go without CC&P again.

I'm definitely happy with my upgrade and can see myself holding on to this phone until I have full upgrade eligibility in 2011.

How would a new design fix flaws in the current design? The 3G design didn't address any issues in the 2G phone. If anything there will be a different batch of flaws.

Good luck with your optimism though.

+1!!!

1GB would be way way enough if you only surf, mail do online gaming...

How would a new design fix flaws in the current design? You don't see ANYTHING wrong with the 3G/3GS design? For your information, the 3G design has many advantages from the original design. Lemme explain:

The iPhone 3G was a better design because:

1. Better speakers. They're louder and the mesh cover protects them better than the holes in the original iPhone.

2. The reception was greatly increased with the plastic back

3. The headphone jack was no longer recessed

4. The shiny plastic has more grip over the matte aluminum

5. The back is one piece… no more cheesy antenna cover (which hardly ever fit right anyway)

6. The screens in the iPhone 3G don't suffer from negative black (look it up).

7. Apple made it easier to replace the glass and LCD by making it very easy to remove and replace. I've done it a few times, however, it's a nightmare on the original iPhone.

Those are some of the things that made the 3G DESIGN better than the original. Some things I'd like to see them fix on the 3G are the following:

1. Give it a more durable plastic. The current plastic/ceramic material cracks (sometimes without the user even treating the phone badly)

2. Go back to a one-piece mute switch. Some iPhone 3Gs have been known to have the little nub unglue from the flip switch.

3. I'd like to see a design fix that makes the glass more likely to stay flush with the chrome bezel. I'm sure they could put a shelf attached to the chrome bezel that makes the glass line up with the bezel every time. It wouldn't sink on one side or raise up.

4. Put a rubber seal under the glass between the LCD and glass to prevent dust from creeping under the glass.

You see… there's quite a few ways Apple could make the build better. They could modify the design to be EASIER to build, thus reducing the number of defective units. Have you ever been in an Apple Store? Every time I'm there, there's someone complaining about the build quality of their iPhone. One time someone was showing the genius how it makes a rattle when he taps on the back. Another time, someone was complaining that the mute switch was too tight.

If Apple could reduce the chances of making a flawed unit by trying to modify the build design in an intelligent way that makes the iPhone both beautiful AND solidly built, they'd have an even better product. Afterall, look at the Unibody MacBook Pro.

I have two 3GS' (black and a white) and a 3G, no light leaks, no dead pixels, bezels are perfectly aligned and no cracks in any of them.
