I've been having some kernel panics at various times -- however, not nearly as frequently as those who have been suffering from the battery/airport issue -- but finally, this morning, I tried to boot it up from being shut off at night, and kernel panic. I restarted to find that this would not allow me back into OSX at all. I went into the OSX install (holding C), but Disk Utility would not verify the Macintosh HD volume, nor would it mount it after the verification suddenly stopped part of the way through.

Holding <Alt>, I can still boot into Windows where it is (far) more stable, but the waving lines return. They disappeared in OSX after the EFI firmware update, the macbook pro update, and the reset of the settings ram (whatever it's called) but never disappeared in Windows. The waves also appear in the OSX install program, but not in the Apple Hardware Test utility.

Thinking it was the RAM, I have run memtest (before the full crash) a few times to no avail. (I ran the GUI version, I had no intention of returning to command line on an OS I don't know). Apple's Hardware Test utility ran--also with no incident to report (extended testing).

Many of the panics beforehand have come either out of the blue (is ichat so unstable?) or coming back from sleep. On my ibook g3, I was ok with the occasional panic--my drivers were sketchy. Here, I gave my desktop parts to the rest of the family because I intended to make the full switch.

My computer is a week 23 build 2.2 with LG screen [part of my fear of replacing it].

At this point, I can't get into my panic.log, but I'm afraid to just reinstall, especially if disk utility has trouble with the drive, I don't want to fsck it up further than it already is.

I also have to ask myself: Windows has not locked up on me (I've been using pcs since the 80808) since I've switched--was going to :apple: a wise decision? I am a student, and would be in considerably more anguish if I hadn't made a nightly backup last night.

Update: Running Disk Utility in the OSX install gives a kernel panic. Now that's irritating.

Well there's clearly something wrong with the hardware. Harddrive or otherwise. I'd get it fixed.

My Guess is bad RAM.

Try go to an Apple store and get them to try Known Good RAM in the quick repair / 0-30 room. Alternativley, get a mate with the exact same config of RAM and give that a go.

Try that before anything else.

Yeah, I don't know--I ran 'Rember' (Gui version of memtest) a few weeks ago and the apple hardware extended test and still nothing on the RAM.

The closest Apple Apple store is almost 2 hours away--the local place already told me if they couldn't find anything they would charge me at least $100 flat. I put a lot into this computer and now all I want is to go back in time and get my money back. Any suggestions as to which option is better/lesser-of-two-evils?

If they are truly Apple authorized, the local place shouldn't be charging you $100 to investigate a warranty claim. They should be billing that time to Apple. I think I'd be very cautious about taking my machine to a place like that.

My recommendation would be driving to the Apple Store or calling Apple Care and having them send you a pre-paid FedEx box.
 
1. The main causes of the panics appear to be the video, input devices, and NTFS file system services.

2. Have you run the bootable Memtest x86 yet? (It's not a RAM issue but hey...)

3. I suggest a full hard drive wipe or at least an archive and install. Boot Camp might play into this as well.
 
well, let's just say I wouldn't be quick to trust a local business in this area with anything particularly technical.

Is is important to set up an appointment with a 'genius' beforehand?

Im getting sick of how everyone thinks "it must be RAM" whenever
there is a hardware failure. Ive heard it about 20 times this week in
different threads and its getting old.

But he also had crashes in the HID and NTFS drivers. Plus several that were unidentifiable due to invalid frame pointers.

I agree it's not always the cause, but it's certainly worth a try before sending a machine off to get a new logic board.
 
Ok, well here's an update.

I got off the phone with a 'genius' who suggested this may have been caused by boot camp's on-the-fly repartitioning, which I did admittedly do early on in the system's lifetime. He suggested going back to disc utility, manually formatting and repartitioning, and then installing OSX and windows from scratch. He seemed confident that this could cause even problems in the disk utility from the OSX install disk. This does line up with the hardware test showing no apparent hardware failure. He suggested, however, that the flickering screen might be fixed with a replacement inverter.

Opinions?
 
I'd try it. I'm just surprised that the install disc would crash trying to read it. Seems like at worse it would just come up with some error that it can't handle it, but who knows.
 
yeah--I was initially afraid to reinstall before I pulled the panic.log out of it, but now that that's out, thankfully, I guess it's worth a shot. I already learned key lessons about regular backups from this thing's bloody instability.

A fresh install is worth a try. Your panics are kind of random, so there is not a single cause that's obvious. That and the repeated NTFS failures may suggest some sort of disk problem.

As for the flickering screen, have you installed the latest EFI Firmware Update? If you have, you should also reset your PRAM by holding down Apple-Option-P-R immediately after power up and until you hear a second startup chime. That seems to resolve the flicker for most.
 
Yes, I have the EFI firmware update and I reset the PRAM, which fixed it in OSX. In Windows and the OSX install it still flickers, but in osx proper/apple hardware utility it does not. As the genius said, "weird."

Also, it just panicked when I went to restart it to reformat/reinstall. Let's have at this sucker.
 
Oh, sorry--let me clarify. I went to 'restart', and before it actually restarted, it panicked. I hard-powered it down and booted from the disk--apple turned into 'not allowed' (or, let's call it, snapple)--tried again, using alt instead of holding down "c," repartitioning and reinstalling..so far so good.

Did you erase both partitions?
 
Yes, this time I did a format into one HFS+ partition ,then split it in disk utility (apparently the on-the-fly boot camp utility may have been the cause?) into an HFS+ and a FAT32 (destined for glory as NTFS) before installing osx for the first time

Good idea getting your partitions set up instead of using the live editor.
