The genius suggested the live editor ("it's in beta") may have been the source of my woes. Let's see.

I've never trusted those things. I mean if they screw up, you've just lost everything on your drive

OK--new info: I reformatted, repartitioned and whoop! maybe a week later:

I think it's important to note that both times now, it ocurrred while my external USB hard drive was plugged into the computer. Is it time to just dump that junk? Or, thoughts?

It looks like it really doesn't like NTFS. Apple will probably pass it off as Boot Camp still being a Beta. I'd remove Windows and see how it works after that. If that still doesn't work then send it back to Apple.

Terrible that you can't run Windows on it. :(

I've never had a problem with Boot Camp.

Well, this only happens when my NTFS external hard drive is attached (or so far). Boot camp has been fine, I suppose. I may take it into the apple store, but it's an hour and a half or so away, and they're always booked on the requesting an appointment with a genius website. This hard drive is, admittedly, a little old. (It says PC/MAC compatible, and says it'll work with mac os 9.x and newer). I'm going to try to leave it on as much as I can and try to get one KP without the drive attached.
