Why recycle it though? Doesn’t it work well enough to keep it?
The display has LCD bleed and the edges all have a wide band of hazy purple/pink coloring has been gradually getting worse. It’s useable otherwise, and dark mode hides most of the defects. But yeah, as long as it‘s still getting updates, and since I have a Smart Keyboard for it, I suppose I could keep it updated and store it in my “go bag” with my other emergency supplies, critical documents, etc., especially since it’s the perfect size for that.

Frankly, if the alternative is to just give it to Apple for free - and especially considering that you can use Dark Mode to hide these issues - I’d keep it, because... what do you have to lose? The worst thing that could happen is that gradual worsening could render the iPad completely unusable, and then you could either fix it, or then give it to Apple for recycling, once it is no longer working.

Apple offered me $0 for it last year, so I asked them to send it back and I returned the 11” M2 I bought. But the screen getting uglier and not everything is in dark mode, and I work from home and use the iPad as a companion so I want it to be nicer, it’s also my most-used personal Apple device. I’ve recently regretted the decision to return the M2 and not recycle. I think the M1 refurb will be a good upgrade and I might recycle the 10.5” just to move on from having spent too much time on iPad issues, lol.

I think the 5th-gen iPad Pro is a great device. iPads have great longevity, and I don’t think you can go wrong with an M-series iPad. The M1 is almost the M2 anyway.

As far as recycling your 10.5-inch iPad Pro goes, it’s obviously your call, but I wouldn’t, at least while it works. Just my humble opinion.

I would never recycle an iPad that cannot be sold but is still functioning, unless the screen is totally unreadable.
My 9.7 pro has develeoped a pulsating black spot plus a stream of lines (much worse than my 10.5 pro while spot) and I thought I'd never use it again, having many other iPads. But then I found a use case, I use it in class (I am a university teacher) for students who cannot be present and need to be there remotely via Zoom. Its speakers allow everyone to hear them clearly, while nobody but me sees the display issues. And it's the lightest iPad pro ever to bring with in me in addition to my 2 pounds Thinkpad nano and my 11" pro (which serves as a monitor for my laptop as I need several documents open at the same time).

In the OP’s case, it’s been 7 years (assuming he got it at launch).

Personally, I don’t even like 4GB RAM devices on iPadOS 16 never mind 2GB.
Yep. It was a launch week buy. Very advanced at the time.
I will probably keep it as a display for my home automation programs, but I would not use it for anything that needs speed or much portability. Because in addition to being slow, I have to keep it plugged into Ethernet to get networking to work reliably.

Happy to see the final entry on your signature line. Mine arrived yesterday and I’m delighted.

P.s. But after years with an old device with condition issues, getting something new means there’s something to protect as well as enjoy. I’ll be more carefree again, once the “new car smell” is gone.

So, did you buy the M1 iPad Pro?

Did you get the refurb M1 in the end?

Yes, ensuring that I couldn’t change my mind again, I dropped the 10.5” off at Apple the day before, along with a collection of old Apple items from my junk drawer. I no longer own a 30-pin connector, hehe.

My 9.7 Pro hasn't been all that laggy/sluggy so I'm sticking with it for now.

I bet the M1 will blow the doors off of it!
Disregarding processing power, I imagine it’s going to feel like a very different device with 120hz, larger screen, even better sound, and FaceID.

Sound is almost identical for the 11". 120hz is something some people live and die for, while some like me don't really care much, larger screen is nice, even with the additional weight, and processing power is noticeable, although the 9,7 is still pretty good. For me the main difference by far is lack of reloads (constant on the 9.7 pro, especially in Safari). Also USB C and pencil 2 are big improvements. I prefer touch id....

I think the largest difference is the screen and battery life. The speakers are similar, 120 hz’s importance is subjective, and Touch ID isn’t too bad.

I have the Air 5 and I got it due to the screen mainly, and battery life (my 9.7-inch iPad Pro is on iOS 12, so battery life isn’t too bad, but there’s a significant difference when compared to both iOS 9, and the Air 5).

I’m a light user, and honestly there isn’t too much of a difference in how they run for what I use them. Obviously, a heavier user on iPadOS 16 will notice a much larger difference.
