But if reverse wireless charging works on changing the controller, would that mean iPhone XS Max also can support reverse wireless charging? Or a new chip is required?

Old wireless controllers don't support Tx mode. The 2017 and 2018 iPhone models used a Broadcom chip. For this year, Kuo says STMicro won the socket. So it's unlikely old models will get Tx mode.

Ok, sad, a gimmick feature (wireless charging) ever only useful when window shopping in an Apple store (for me).

As for the weight, it should not change too much, maybe a few mg or something like that.
