Could you use it? Sure. Is it waterproof? Certainly not. Solong as you protected the ports, it seems like it would be pretty splash resistant as-is.
There are very few seams in the design. In all honesty, it would not be so far a stretch of the imagination that if you were hardcore enough, you could disassemble the iPad and with some good use of silicone sealant, tighten up what seams there are (basically the interface between the glass and Al backing) and if you could find a good way to waterproof up the ports, you could make the thing pretty water resistant.

I had a relative I gave a nano to for Christmas and he took it into the pool on a raft or something. He called and told me he got it wet.
Apple would not do anything obviously, but I did end up replacing it for him with one of the new generation ones, which worked out nicely because he likes the video cam, radio and other features.
I don't see any realistic way you could water proof it without special headphones and such.

Seriously though, all I'm saying is look at the thing. Water isn't going to get in through the Aluminum backing, or the glass front. There really aren't that many points of entry for water. Gasket up that metal-glass interface, protect the button, and deal with the ports, and there isn't any place for water to get in.
This is also my issue. If it can't take a splash of water, it isn't much good. How hard is it to put sealing around the places where water could enter the device? What exactly are you supposed to do when somebody spills coffee on it, while walking by in the Starbucks and gawking at it? Whoops! Sploosh!
Also, what happens it falls off of the table in the Starbucks? What's that shiny thing you have on the table? Is that a newspaper you're reading? That's so... Whoops! Splat!

Besides, I don't see why this idea is such a stretch for you seeing as the device appears a lot less vulnerable to water than a laptop
I agree with that. They'll probably do both their armor and defender series (I think that's the names of the products). One is full waterproof, impact resistant, etc etc. Big, heavy, expensive (all relatively speaking). It's for swimming and kaiaking with your iPod. The other is a soft case with makes it "splash resistant", for hanging around the pool. A silicone sleeve that covers the ports, and wraps around the bezel where the metal and glass meet would be enough to keep you from hurting it in the rain or by a pool side (but not sitting the hot tub/bath).
I've been impressed with the full waterproof otterbox I got my wife for her older nano.

surely Apple has a moisture indicator installed to void your warranty if it gets damp. SO if you send it in for repair and they see the tell-tale pink color you are SCREWED, even if it never got dunked in water.

If I had the money, I'd find a way to permanently mount one of these into my shower. Touchscreen internet, music control and email all in the shower... Heck yes! Where there's a will, there's a way (usually with money as the bridge). Am I alone here or does someone else see the value in this?

How long do you take a shower for? More than 10 minutes?
Fridge mount? How long do you stand in front of the fridge for?
