Hello, i need an advise. it is worth Apple Mac Studio M2 MAx in the middle 2024? or i should wait to the end of 2024 and buy maybe an Apple Mac Studio M4 Max?
I dont understand the Roundups section when i see now about the Apple Mac Studio M2 MAx Caution Approaching End of Cycle.
What is your opinion?
Thanks in advance.

I purchased one a week ago. I had sold my M1 Mac mini and I was annoyed at having to constantly plug and unplug my macbook air to my monitor so decided to pick up the studio. Very happy with it and it will still work just as well when the new models are released. It is far more powerful than what I need anyway. It all comes down to do you need it now or can you wait? You could be waiting a month, 6 months, or a year until the new model is released. Why wait if you need or want it now.

I bought the 12c/64GB/1TB Studio. This is to replace my MBP M1 Max that only had 32GB memory. I kept on running out of memory plus I wanted the ports. My dock was flakey. I pulled the trigger now because my trade in was 1200.00. I figured if and when the new M4s come out, trade-ins will plummet.

I'm still a little curious if WWDC will release the Studio with M4 (M3.1) :)

We could see M4 Max / M4 Ultra Mac Studios at WWDC 2024, or soon thereafter; gotta have something to develop Apple's AI push on...!
I really hope it comes to that; some leaker however said it will be wwdc 2025; we have to wait 3-4 weeks and will see

I bought a refurbished Mac Studio M2 Max in January and I'm super happy with it. It depends on your use case. I'm sure my Studio will be with me for many years to come …

I'm seriously contemplating this actually. But in my case it would be like for like 32GB/1TB and its for the trade in value which i'm concerned will plummet after WWDC

Also, i'm worried about the degrading battery of the MBP which is usually plugged in. I don't trust the charging AI which fumbles a lot. Hence i'm considering the dedicated M2 Max Studio

I'm sure selling the unit rather than doing the trade-in would give you extra $$$ but I don't want the hassle. I also wanted to see how this new second-gen 3nm chip does in the wild.

We have very similar concerns and wants. :) BTW, my Studio arrived early, so far its slick.

Do you use anything for on the go computing?

I take my iPad Pro 12.9" everywhere I go. If I need to terminal or remote into a home machine, I'll use OpenVPN and use whatever app I need. For the most part, the iPad is sufficient and gets the job done.

Makes sense

Mark Gurman now says no SoC update for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro until 2025 and considered he nailed M4 on the iPad Pro, I am inclined to believe him.

Yes, he did say Apple was developing a fourth M3 SoC (which everyone assumes is an M3 Ultra), but with M4 now out and M4 Pro and Max likely arriving this Fall, if there was an M3 Ultra, I presume it has been cancelled like the "M1 Extreme" for the Mac Pro was (and probably for the same reason of it not offering enough performance and value for what it costs to make and sell).

So I now believe we either see an M4 Studio alongside the M4 MacBook Air in March 2025 or it will wait until WWDC 2025 and update alongside the Mac Pro. If Mac Pro is getting an "M4 Extreme", then I think it could be on it's own at WWDC and Mac Studio would drop earlier.

I suppose a lot will depend on what you have now and if you're happy with it.
I bought a Studio M2 Max in March to replace a 2017 iMac and couldn't be happier with it.
For FCP it absolutely blazes, I'm so impressed with it. And just started with Logic and it doesn't miss a beat.
The M3 / M4 will probably be even faster, but it will be a difference I probably wouldn't notice in practical terms.

I'm still using the iMac for work mainly, and it probably will last until the end of the year (fingers crossed, it is showing signs of age!) but if I'd waited I would have missed 6 months or more of great fun and satisfaction with the Studio.

Good luck with your choice!

For sure but the big bonus of the new silicon is the onboard inclusion of things like AV1, ray tracing and other new technologies. Those go a looooooong way in comparison to just raw speed boosts (like MHz). If a chip is missing a key architectural component, they often live a shorter life. Most processors are shelved by companies and software if they don't meet the bar.

Whatever choice you will do, the next will be better and maybe yours won't support new features.

I bought an M1 Max for video work using FCP. The new smooth slo-mo feature won't work in 8k on it. I need an M2.

Maybe I will need an M4 for other new Ai features etc. So whatever you buy, it will be old at next iteration.

On My iPhone, or my iPad?
I just bought one last week to replace a 2012 27" iMac....I love it. If I need the upgrade next year...I'll trade this one in then. If you wait for the perfect computer, you'll never buy one. There's always another upgrade around the bend.

I have an M1 Max based MacStudio, and it is "stupid fast". In my testing, it runs Intel Mac applications faster under its x86 emulation than the 3.2 GHz Intel Mac Pro that preceded it. The M1 MacStudios are fast... really fast!

So... M2, M3... not sure I care. These machines are in that great spot that happens every now and then where the hardware has gotten faster more quickly than the software has gotten slower (i.e. bloated with ever more unnecessary new features).

The MacStudio is a fabulous machine. M1, M2, M3... any one of them will knock your socks off!

The Big Leap Forward occurred with the M1. Later generations will always be incremental performance increases. You can't go wrong buying any one of them.
