Right now I'm backing-up to an external HD. But in case of failure of the drive, I also want to backup to a cloud facility. Google seems to be the way to go.
That's wise. It's always a good thing to have multiple backups with one being offsite.

I don’t have a lot of photos to begin with, just around 30-40 GB. Not too much right? Not so quick. My OneDrive account is registered during the SkyDrive era, which had 25GB of free storage. And then Microsoft gave me additional 15GB for uploading photos from camera roll to their server. Of course, I can use that additional 15 GB to store anything, not just photos.
Due to complications, I am forced to use OneDrive for business and I pay 1TB space alongside my office 365 account. Because only OneDrive can backup my photos automatically, I need to regularly move old photos and videos to my OneDrive for business to free up spaces. I also have 50GB iCloud to store photos, but I regularly move old ones to OneDrive for business. I have tried to use optimised storage, then I receive a huge data bill after just one month using it because of all sorts of downloads when viewing it.
Google photos won’t save full resolution images for you unless you pay their storage and choose to save original images.
