Geezus did anyone read the OP's question?

The BEST iPhone for your eyes is the 8 Plus without question. It's not even a discussion.

I waited unless the XR was released last war until I upgraded so I could compare what it offered. I thought it was a really good phone and was surprised the screen was nowhere near as inferior as any of the tech journalists and forum experts had claimed.

I went with the 8+ though because I felt the things it had that I use made it the better phone.

The 8 plus is a fantastic phone and will be for years to come I think. Sure the XR will last longer, but if you prefer Touch ID and the home button (and no notch) 8+ is the way to go imo.

Completely agree. But if you are fond of the full screen design, go for the XR.

IMO the XR is the full screen design that can´t be... the bezels are pretty huge for an "all screen design", of course, smallers than the 8+, but bigger for what you can find in others full screen design phones.

I bought 2 XR in one year, and always go back to the 8... the XR was too heavy for me, the 8+ is heavier I think...

Also the notch is pretty awful, when you look to photos or watch videos, I can´t stand on it. 5 years ago no one would admit a notch on the screen and now they are all fan of it... I prefer the clean screen, like the 8 has.

The X/MAX gives me eye strain so was not an option for me.

Not really sure why that is please explain. The XR has the upgraded LCD screen and its 6.1 inches vs 5.5

I need a bigger phone due to my eyes. I have a regular 8 and love it, just need something bigger. I am at a toss between an 8+ and an XR. I just can't get past the notch on the XR. Leaning towards the 8+....is it worth it getting it at this point in it's life cycle?

Having had an XR since launch, I would possibly suggest the 8 Plus if your looking at it, it’s cheaper, has a decent camera, nice screen with a better resolution and no stupid black bars when watching videos. It’s an ok phone the XR but has its flaws, I’ve even thought about getting an XS possibly due to the smaller size but meh.. one thing that’s a little annoying with the XR is sometimes you tube videos don’t go to 720P automatically and look horrid! You have to manually select it.
But you get use to the notch and whilst Face ID isn’t as quick as Touch ID it is a lot more convenient.

I went from a 6S to an XR because of its size and my eyes, but I prefer smaller phones hence maybe getting an XS. The XR does feel like a brick in weight, it’s a sold phone though but heavy.. the camera is flipping amazing however.

8 Plus is an amazing phone. I love mine. It can be a tough decision between the 8 Plus or Xr, but for me the 8 Plus wins even though it's not the latest model. I had to decide last year in December between 8 Plus or Xr (as the Xs (Max) was just too expensive for me, especially with 256 GBs) and 8 Plus won for me.

However if you wanna buy one right now, i strongly recommend you to wait one more month. Let's see what Apple does for the 11 and 11r. (or however they will be called). If you don't like them you can always get the older ones at a lower price point.

Well right now, maybe i would get the Xr over the 8 Plus because the 8 Plus will be 2 years old soon and Xr is only 1 year old. But it also comes down what you prefer. I actually made a comparison because people ask this all this time:

8 Plus:

1080p Display with more PPI
3D Touch
Homebutton & Touch ID (personal preference)
Dual Camera with Optical Zoom and Studio Lightning in the Portrait Mode

Xr:

Faster CPU (A12)
Better camera quality
Portrait Mode with Front Facing Camera thanks to Face ID system
Advanced Bokeh in camera
Smart HDR
Bigger battery
Gestures & Face ID (again personal preference)
Supported longer

Xr may excel in most points, but you also lose stuff that you already had with previous models. 1080p Display (if you had a Plus model before), 3D Touch and Optical Zoom (but 7 Plus owners shouldn't consider the 8 Plus anyway, rather go with the X or Xr, 7+ and 8+ are too similar to justify the price tag to upgrade IMO)

They are both amazing phones. Again it depends on your preference, old design with home button vs. more modern looking phone with Face ID

I've read you currently have the 8, so your experience will be similar but obviously you gain stuff.

Do you value having a 1080p display? Because regular 8 is only 750p so you get a higher resolution anyways, Xr has 828p and honestly the Display is fine. Amazing colors and contrast. Looks good. 8 Plus is just a little bit better when it comes to the display

The XR display (‘Liquid retina’) isn't that much more ‘upgraded’, both the iPhone 8 and XR display look fairly uniform with each other with side-by-side comparisons. No matter how you look at it, they’re both LCD displays.

I get that. The poster said that the 8 plus was far and away a better phone so I was just trying to find out the reasoning behind why they felt that because I’ve never owned either.

Whatever you choose to do, wait until after the September keynote, when it's likely both the 8+ and XR will be cheaper (and there will be a further option of an XIR, probably for the same $749 the XR is currently going for). Don't think you can go wrong with either option, but contrary to others, I think the 8 plus will easily go strong across it's full set of iOS versions, and will likely be supported up to iOS 15 or even 16. So I wouldn't let one year of extra 'longevity' for the XR sway you.

I’d probably consider the 8 Plus to be the last great LCD iPhone, and I have an XR!!... they look very similar in colour but the resolution and square screen format makes a difference I think.

Speaking of which I wonder if they'll bump the Xr up to 1080p this year!?

8+ is still a good phone. I’ve been using one for months and it’s as fast as my previous Max. Better screen than the XR and no black bars while watching videos. I’d wait until next month though, even if you settle for the 8+ you might be able to get it cheaper.

8+ is a good option. It would be pocket friendly and you won't find it difficult using it because you have used the normal 8. I love the linoleum device too because of the size.

Completely agree with you there.

I doubt it, I think it will get an OLED screen next year though, which is fantastic but I worry then about its resolution, because it has ‘zoomed screen’ mode currently due to the resolution it uses, if it then uses a different resolution to what it has now or between the Max and 1080P then it won’t have zoomed screen mode, I was looking yesterday funnily enough and whilst the XS sure is more compact, you can see the text etc on the MAX much more clearly because of zoomed screen mode.
I’m also not sure many would swallow an OLED with the same resolution as the current XR, a 1080P panel however would be nice and it’ll still be lower then the Max and 5.8” models.

Gotta disagree entirely here. The 8 Plus is my ‘work phone’ and there certainly is nothing ‘pocket friendly’ about it. The weight and overall size make it fairly obtrusive, and then if you add a case, it’s even adding more bulk.

Yeah if they're going OLED, I hope the screen is one thing they don't cut corners on. They've made the X/S/Max look good for pentile displays with the high pixel density and greater fill factor (i.e. less black space between the sub pixels) if they try using even a regular 1080 resolution with Samsung's standard diamond pattern, it's going to be a noticeably less pleasant viewing experience. Though overall still one of my favourite phones, my Lumia 925 (~330ppi) looked barely acceptable back in 2013. It's noticeably worse than a 326ppi iPhone 6S to look at now. My Lumia 930 is a little better, but I'd take the 6 plus or 8 plus LCD over it any day.

The 8+ is larger than my old Moto Z, that was the largest phone that I had and super difficult to put in my pocket...

Maybe from your own angle, I mean its pocket friendly in the sense that its a cheaper than the other one.

I don't see it as a big phone at all. I see it as a slim gadget.

Some of the new Samsung ‘A’ models have 1080P big OLEDS or AMOLEDS, may give an idea of what it would look like? But Apple does tend to use different colour schemes thank goodness.

I still think the 8 Plus is the way to go for the OP.

It really doesn’t matter what phone you want. Unless you are looking to purchase the newest generation I would say wait if you can to purchase your phone because even if you find a nice deal now, when the new phones are announced, the price of the rest of the line up goes down even more. So if you can hold off until the 2019 iPhones are released if you are looking to buy a previous generation iPhone.
