I have a M1 11" cellular and a 12.9" cellular. Coconut battery is showing my battery capacity is at 88% on them with only around 130-150 cycles on both. Apple will not replace the batteries after conducing their testing. Is the M2 much faster for a casual user or is it probably a waste of money? Thanks in advance.

If you want a new toy, yeah go for it.

I recently bought a second hand m1 12.9. I’m over the moon about it - it’s replacing my 2018. The thing that i miss is hover - aside that I think it’s pretty powerful and I’m a heavy user. The m2 is more powerful, no doubt, but no limitations with this one yet. I would wait for M3 if you want to upgrade but have no urgency.

I don't think you should upgrade, the M1 is very fast (as I've heard), and the M2 is only about 10-20% faster.

The only scenario I can imagine is if you work very heavily with drawing, painting and / or 3D modeling.

When I say "heavily", I mean to the point you need 100+ layers to draw / paint and / or to design projects that will cover the front of a 50-floor building.

The iPad Pro m1 can already work in these scenarios, but a speed boost would be desirable.
Otherwise, for most users (me included), it wouldn't make sense.

Of course, if Apple were to unlock the iPad's full power for us to do things like virtualization, it would make sense too.
I know... crazy idea, right?

The best way to judge it, get M2 one for review, test its speed. If not noticeable, return it within a return window. If works, just keep it. Therefore, no assumption, only fact for making a decision. I would not rely on anyone else especially from strangers to make a decision. I will make it by getting facts on my own and listening to family members and close friends.

I don’t want macOS on an iPad, but I really do wish Apple would open up iPadOS to these types of uses. I don’t fine the os itself particularly limiting - I can do everything I need to do. But to be able to use it for any task I want rather than the rather sanitised Apple idea would be great.

I don’t see the point- your battery is still fine and I can’t imagine you would get much out of that speed bump if you are a casual user like you say. Of course, if you just want a new toy then that’s all the justification you need

Is the M2 really all that much more powerful though? I was using my partner's baseline M1 MBA for a while before buying my baseline M2 MBA. The things I do on each computer (game development, photo editing, etc), I'm not seeing any noticeable performance gain. Even having the two laptops side by side running the same process, it's all the same speed. The screen and design of the M2 MBA at least don't look like something from the mid-2010s.

The M2 iPad Pro has the Apple Pencil hover, I cannot think of another reason worth upgrading for. Even using my M1 iPP and 2020 iPP (both 12.9") side by side, the speed improvements were only marginal.

I'd say keep the M1 iPad Pro for now, the M3 is rumored to have a new design, so you might as well wait for that.

For the casual user? Nope. I doubt a casual user would notice a difference between the M1 & M2 ipad pros. Even a Pro user probably wouldn’t notice a huge difference. If you’re going to upgrade your current M1 iPad Pro, I’d wait for the M3 OLED iPads coming next year. It will be the first significant upgrade to the Pro iPads in awhile.

By casual I mean, Facebook, Twitter, note taking and paperwork and some photoshop. I use the Magic Keyboard all the time.

you won't see the difference... your battery is still ok, just wait for the 5th gen next year with an OLED screen and M3, don't waste you money on M2 now

Yeah, definitely not. I seriously doubt you’d notice any significant difference btwn an M1 & M2 iPad Pro running facebook, twitter, note taking or using photoshop. Again, if you want a significant upgrade, I’d wait for the M3 OLED iPad Pros next year. But even that might be overkill for what you're using it for. But the OLED screen is gonna be awesome for watching movies on! 👍🏼

No “probably” about it, it’s totally a waste of money.

But it’s your money so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Vaya con Dios.
