Is it worth it to upgrade iPad Air 1?

Hey guys, currently I am using an iPad Air 1 32GB, is it worth it for me to upgrade to the current 2017 iPad? And if I were to do it, is it better for me to just do the Best Buy Trade-In or sell it on my own? What is the current used value on one of them anyway (ball park figure)?

I would consider the difference between your current model and the new 2017 model. The iPad has a brighter screen and faster processor. For me with my Air 2 it wouldn't really be worth the upgrade but you have to look at your use case to determine if you need it.
Also the Best Buy Trade In program may take your Air 1 for $150, assuming nothing is wrong with it. I think you should consider selling it yourself to get the biggest bang for buck. Normally, they sell for $200-250 on eBay. Perhaps you could should start a 'feeler' thread in the MacRumors Marketplace.

Best Buy's trade in is a good deal and it's no hassle. I would consider the new 2017 iPad. A used Air 1 would sell for around $125.00 (My guess). For reference, you could check other sites that sell used iPads to see what they are currently listed for.

Yeah you're really limited by 1GB of RAM. If you do a lot of browsing on your iPad, you'll notice a big difference with the extra ram plus the processor is twice as power in the air 2 or new iPad. I upgraded from an iPad mini 2 which was roughly as powerful as the iPad Air. Night and day difference. No more annoying hiccups, no more safari reloading my pages if I have more than 2 tabs open, etc.

I say go for it.

Alright thanks guys, I will just upgrade then and sell the iPad Air. Unless used iPad Airs drop in price, it looks like they are still going for $200-250 used. The one I have is still in perfect condition with all original accessories.

I just upgraded from an Air 1 to the new 2017 iPad. A few thoughts. I'm not noticing a huge difference in the upgrade, other than Safari tabs refreshing quicker. Most games and productivity apps feel more or less the same. Everything else about the tablet is exactly the same. Even battery life I notice no changes. I've only been using it a few days so time will tell. I do use the iPad a few hours a day so to me it was a worthy update as it's my favorite Apple device.

As far as selling the iPad Air, I have the 64gb version (mint condition with box) and I'm having trouble even getting $200 for it on Craigslist in NYC. I might end up trading it in to Best Buy for $150 if it comes down to it, but that offer ends April 15th.

[update] I did sell it on Craigslist for $200. I had to meet up with the guy and have him demo it for about 10 minutes to ensure it was working properly. No problem at all.

Craigslist is fickle. I'm in Florida. Got the 64gb iPad Air as well. People are low ballers

I thought about trading it into Best Buy (April 15th is deadline). But those who have base 16gb model iPad Air would have a harder time to sell it for $200 plus on Craigslist.

But I ended up selling it for $200 64gb iPad Air model today. I put the ad up last week saying this is best and lowest price and my $200 was firm and people still low balled me to $175 even though I had locked in a $169 trade in price at Best Buy ( now trade in price is down to $150 price)

Then I changed price to $220 yesterday and someone got me to go down to $200 as the price! Just idiots on Craigslist. $200 was my price point. And people just think u can go lower even when I originally said firm price of $200. Than raising the price still gets me to my bottom line

I noticed a difference between the new iPad and the air 2. Air 1 only has 1gb of ram so the 2gb of ram in the new iPad should be a noticeable difference to you.

The iPad Air 2 is still fairly sufficient. But I do question how long it will be supported, which is why I would suggest the 2017 9.7 iPad that has the updated processor and is equally just as strong with the battery. However, it does lack the laminate display for reflectivity.

In September the new Ax chips will be introduced and then ... a few month later ... they certainly will be new iPads.
If you need a new iPad now, I would find a refurbished one and not the just released "New Air 1".
This introduction was meant for different target audiences. A cheaper media consumption device that has an Apple Logo.

The iPad 2 will most likely be discontinued,but just like the iPhone 6,it has capacity for the new 64-bit firmware,so even if Apple stop building it,it will be fully working for about 2-3 years more,or even longer.
Of course,it will be more difficult to find apps for it over time,but that will take a while.

Thanks for your honest appraisal, most of which covers why I haven't yet 'uprgraded' from Air 1 to 2017.

Though everything else as I understand it, isn't the same i.e. Volume and mute buttons differ?-correct me if i'm wrong.

Major differences is a faster processor,a retina screen,better graphics and more storage. Of course,if you only use it to read news and discussions on the internet,you won't notice anything,but try heavy graphic stuff like HD video,photo editing or gaming,and you will clearly find out how different they are,.

For games,browse the App Store,there are several strategy games. The one I prefer right now,is one themed with battle strategy from American civil war,it reminds of the board game risk,that's also in the App Store. If you want something more "graphical" try apps with games created by Sid Meier,there is pirate games,civilisation development,and another of my favourites,Sid Meier railroads,also available for Mac.

I'm quite happy with my Air 1. It's certainly fast enough on wifi, and the battery lasts a long time with moderate usage. For kicks, I went to Best Buy and inquired about upgrading my Air to the 2017. The salesman tried to get me to buy a Pro (uh no...I may be a liberal, but I'm not wasting money to keep up with the Jones family down the street), and he didn't use the trade in incentive to entice me. I probably would have upgraded if he had offered me $150 for my Air. It really was poor salesmanship.

So I sit here perfectly happy with my Air 1. I will have it three years in September, so maybe an upgrade then....maybe.

Look at your priorities. Is it a need due to system constraints/performance, or a want. If it's a want, is $300+ better served for some other purpose?
