I'm a huge Apple fan-boy and I always have been. I don't ALWAYS agree with Apple (at least not at first) but eventually I believe Apple knows what they're doing. I do not pray to Steve Jobs at night but I love Apple products. If Apple makes it... I gotta have it. It's obsessive, I know. It's an expensive obsession I have... really expensive, but it's what I love.

Lemme ask you... is it so wrong to be an Apple fan-boy? I think not. I'm sick of all the "Kool-Aid drinker" and "fan-boy" comments that go on around here. It just seems like a lot of PC users with iPhones lurk around here just so they can call people "fan-boys".

I don't care if you're a fan-boy or a PC user... just keep your fanboy and Kool-Aid drinking comments to yourself please.

I don't think it really matters. You can be a fan of what you want and buy what you please. It just becomes problematic when one fails to have an open mind towards the views of others. No person (or corporation) is infallible. This world is not black and white either.

There is nothing wrong with being a fanboy. Many, if not most, of the people on this forum are. Where many take issue is a blind allegiance to anything Apple or an Apple can do no wrong attitude. Apple is far from perfect.

there are cases where comments made by people who love a company that make no sense and is oblivioous to the pros that the competeing products have

if "fan boys" want to make ignorant statements, i dont see the problem calling them on it

i mean i like apple, hence why i am on this board. however, they dont walk on water imo

I agree. It's not so much how you feel about Apple, but how you contribute to a discussion thread, that matters. Those who enter a thread about "Palm Pre vs. iPhone" just to bash and not actually contribute are the "hated fanboys".

I am a huge Apple fan too. I truly feel they have raised the bar very high in the smartphone field, almost overnight. It still amazes me. The Pre seems amazing too, but the Pre is only what it is because Apple came to town and set a new standard. And I think it will take some time before the Pre evolves to a true competitor in every respect.

I get told im an apple fan-boy by alot of people ironically i didn't own a mac until a year ago and had been using PC for the past 10 or so years. But as soon as i got my mac and learned how to use it i never plan on going back. It just seems to fit me better then using anything else and if that makes me a fan boy then hell im a fan boy.

Oh please, you want to talk about blind allegiance to something? The wife has a pair of Christian Louboutin's that cost me a Mac Mini and look the same to me as a pair of shoes that came from Dillards. Oh, but they are designer. Now THAT'S an expensive addiction.

True, but IMO there is something wrong with actually calling the poster a fanboy rather than taking issue with the post. "Fanboy" is a term with intentionally insulting connotations directed towards the poster and not the post, so I'm not sure why it's allowed under MR's "no personal insults" policy.

Those who enter a thread about "Palm Pre vs. iPhone" just to bash and not actually contribute are the "hated fanboys".

But then on the flip side, you have the trolls (yes, I realize that's a personal insult too, but they both seem to be tolerated) - people who come to an unapologetically mac-centric site with no interest in apple or its products just to laugh at people who buy apple products and start flame wars. The iphone forum has seen a huge swell of trolling as discussion of the Pre has picked up.

To be clear, I'm not saying that pointing out competing products, or even explaining why you prefer competing products, is trolling. But if your only reason for being on MR is to laugh at the iphone and extoll the Pre (or OS X and windows, or whatever), then you're on the wrong site.

Both fanboys and trolls make constructive discussion difficult because neither comes in with an open mind. As between the two, though, I'll take a fanboy over a troll any day because at least fanboys don't start out with the intent of harassing or annoying.

Is it wrong to be a fan-boy?
Depends on your definition of the term to be honest.

There seem to be two different views as to what a fan boy is.

1) Someone that loves all things Apple and buys all things Apple.

2) Someone that sees no negative in Apples products, defends everything they do no matter how absurd, etc.

#1 to me is not a fan boy, but just someone with a lot of money to spare.

#2 to me is what a true fan boy is, and these annoy me.

Being a fan boy is like being a homer on your favorite sports team site. Your team is the greatest, do everything the right way, etc.

It just gets old....

Like what you want.
Buy what you want.
Keep your mind open.
Be objective.

It's not wrong per se, but it is worthy of derision, particularly when it takes the form of a "love it or leave it" attitude.

I don't understand why people are fanboys to specific companies.

I am a fanboy to good products, no matter what company they come from.

I can assure all of you, that the companies that you are so loyal too, are not nearly as loyal to you.

I love apple and would never go back to a pc! we have a pc downstairs that i have to get on occasionally and it sucks ha it is so slow and takes forever to get anything done. I dont know why people find it hard to make the switch. Because the price really isnt that bad, in the end you get what you pay for!

I don't know if you differentiate between "fanboys" and "complete kiss arses" but I hate the 2nd one. I used to post a lot on the apple forums, and if I ever criticised the iPhone the same names would immediately post in apple's defence.

"The iPhone doesn't have MMS because email is better." is a common one :D

I can't stand the term.

Never in all my years have I referred to a Linux/Microsoft user as a "fanboy". It's just a ridiculous inflammatory term too often applied to an overly broad audience. Particularly rolling into a Mac targeted site and throwing it around.

A-doy? It's a Mac site!

Frankly, I'd like to see it added to the site's profanity filter.

Its ok, but people tend to dismiss fanboys because at times people blindly accept apple products and refuse to admit that apple can make a dog of a product, or make mistakes.

Also don't forget apple is an entity designed to make a profit, they do so, by designing, building great hardware and software but make no mistake, they in it to make a buck. To that end, if I don't like what they're doing I'll not hold my tongue.

To me, 'fanboy' often means never admitting when Apple makes a mistake or does something wrong. So if that's true, I'm not a fanboy.

I love Apple, but I love pointing out their flaws. The worse the flaw, the more it needs pointing out. Case in point, I loved this:
http://daringfireball.net/2009/05/diary_of_an_app_store_reviewer

So if a 'fanboy' can't complain, then that's not me.

But if your definition of 'fanboy' includes "being critical when needed" then sure, I have no problem being called that. The word doesn't bother me, I just don't like it if people think I always defend Apple, because that's not the case. (And I think the Pre and HD Zune are really cool! Can a fanboy do that? I dunno.)

I agree with that definition, but I still think the term is a personal insult and shouldn't be allowed if applied to a specific person.

I don't really see this site as being a nest for fanboys, but then again I'm a sucker for videogames and are a member of many videogames boards and there you can talk about fanboys!

A fanboy for me is someone that makes a thread saying that a device is better then another device, and don't have any claims for it.

Wow, you sound like my husband lol.

If it makes you happy be a "fan-boy", I'm a "fan-girl", I just love there products. Use what you want, I just choose to use a Mac.:) Somebody is always going to disagree with you if you say Macs are better then PCs, they have that right. If you like Apple, and can afford to buy there items, more power to you.
