That's what I did. All my issues are now resolved or, in one case, 'worked around' (I'm talking the hdmi->hdmi bug, the workaround being usb-c -> displayport in my case). Both my machines are now on 10.15.2 and everything's working great.

I'm a non native English reader... so perhaps I didn't get the meaning of your post:
You have a mac with a faulty HDMI out, you lose one of the precious USB-C plugs... but "everything's working great".
Well... perhaps you mean "working great" the same as when you use the "emergency substitute wheel" in a car; yes, the car runs fine, but...

You do have a point. Yes, it's a "work around". Everything is working great with the work around in place until such time as Apple fixes hdmi->hdmi. I have sufficient alternative ports available for this particular workaround not to be a pain point for me.

From what we can observe it's easy to conclude the problem lies in software, not hardware. The hardware worked fine until it didn't. This loss of existing functionality coincided with a major mac os release, opinions seem to vary on which one broke it, I have no idea so won't comment. I'd be very interested to know how it got into production; regression testing should have picked it up. It's also slightly strange it's taking so long to fix.

I'm unhappy with the hdmi issue, my work around is not to shutdown.
I have to play some plugging / unplugging with the EGPU and mini hdmi.
Sometimes the mini will crash during the Catalina login process.

I'm not a fan

Just wondering, when you say that sometimes the mini crashes, what do you see? Or does the screen go black, if so does the mini's white LED light go out?

How do you recover, with a forced power off perhaps? Sorry, it's the programmer in me asking.

If I remember correctly, and I haven't seen this in about month (since I haven't rebooted).

1. Catalina loads up to password prompt screen
2. Enter password
3. See progress bar reach about 80%
4. Bar gets stuck
5. 30 seconds later the screen will go black

I have the mini under the desk so I never bothered to check if the mini is still on or not.

I tried to boot once in safe mode, that time it worked but subsequent attempts seemed to have failed.

Hard reset is what I do.

I've been saying this for years, but it always seems like the odd-numbered release versions of Mac OS X/macOS get bungled somehow. I remember how horrific 10.9 and 10.13 were out of the gate, and actually, neither improved, even with updates. 10.9 was so bad that I had to return to 10.8.

On the other hand, even-numbered release versions has always been sturdy and good right outside the gate. 10.8, 10.10, and 10.14 were especially decent and worked great right at .0, while 10.12 was a bit buggy, but nothing like 10.13.

10.15 was pretty bad at .0, but so far, at .2, seems to be plugging along okay. Hopefully.
I found it to be the exact opposite. 10.8, 10.10, 10.12 and 10.14 were the buggiest releases for me.
10.9, 10.11, 10.13 were the best.
Catalina is total and utter dog pou. Don't ever upgrade to it.

10.14 is the new Snow Leopard. Sorry.

10.14 is the new Snow Leopard. Sorry.
In my experience, it doesn’t even come close to the stability and speed of 10.6 (the terrible font rendering on non retina displays is enough to make me hate it).
I’d rather choose 10.13 as the “new snow leopard”, I’ve never had a single problem with it. Fast, smooth, stable, refined and good looking

I must be living in a parallel dimension. Which begs the question just what are the edge cases you folks are running that are stimulating these negative reviews. Sure, I have one perfectly fine workaround in place (the HDMI thing). When you've been around as long as I have and been through as many opsys upgrades, that's no big deal. Maybe y'all need to lower your expectations just a tad. Progress tends to break some things along the way. Personally I'm totally happy with Catalina on my network. The sky is not, actually, falling in.

If you believe the sky is, actually, falling in, please make your case with specifics.

I’d simply like an OS that doesn’t freeze/crash every 5 seconds, that doesn’t show at least one bug a day in various areas, that doesn’t make nearly impossible to do any system software installation outside the Mac App Store... I could continue all day.
It is possible to release a software that’s stable enough, like previous versions were. I’m not pretending 10.6 standards (that would be impossible on a yearly release), but I think 10.11/10.13 standard is the bare minimum for users that actually use their machines for something more serious than browsing through Facebook or watching YouTube.
BTW, I removed Catalina from all my Macs yesterday, and it’s never coming back.

How about 10.14.6? I thought that was pretty damn solid, IMHO.

I have no freezes/crashes, and see no bugs per day (other than the hdmi port on my mini doesn't work). I'm definitely living in a parallel universe. And I don't use Facebook at all ?or youtube much unless I'm looking for hard data. Career software engineer speaking. :)

Maybe I'm not running the right third party software.
