Honestly, this is the same way I think of it.

Apple charges pretty high prices and going directly through Apple Store, there's no retailer taking a cut of the profit. I expect returns is something they already account for. They probably gain more sales by allowing 14 day hassle free returns compared to losses incurred. Thanks to their return policy, I know I've bought a few Apple products I was undecided on that I ended up keeping.

Now folks who return and exchange products 20 times due to some issue you'd have view with a microscope, yeah, that's a tad excessive.

I don’t know if it is the case but I think that small Youtube channels who review Apple products ( I don’t meanthe big ones to whom most probably Apple send the unit to be reviewed ) they buy, review and return it.

In europe we don’t have this return policy I think or even if we do, many do not know it or not use it like in America. I find it wrong, but I don’t judge who does it, it is just my thought. Then I can see how nice it would be, if i could buy both 12.9 and 11 inch iPad and try them both and see which one I like in everyday life. But I feel like many does it excessively, and at least ethically I find it wrong.

But well, on the other hand, it may be good for people who wants to buy an affordable Apple product as they could buy it like open box item and have a better deal on it. That’s definitely a good side of it, unless Apple repacks them and sells them as new ones, again, which I don’t think so, but I don’t know well.

In the US, Apple probably sells them again eventually but likely as refurbished products several months down the line.

When I buy Apple products from Best Buy, Target, etc. I don't return unless there's an actual defect.

Since Apple is both the manufacturer and seller when buying from Apple Store, though, I tend to view purchases from them differently. As those cheesy TV ads say, "You'll love our product or you get your money back".

I think Apple's return policy is geared exactly towards those who have trouble determining whether/which product is for them. I also have no doubt there are plenty who bought both 12.9 and 11 because they couldn't decide on size that ended up keeping both. :p

I think that if the company offers such possibility, it is a very legitimate reason to buy both and return one. Me for example, even tho I always prefered 12.9” iPad Pro for the screen real estate, I always wondered if I could get by with 11” both for the price and the portability reasons but here in Europe, we don’t have the same policies ( I think, never researched ) or thought that there may be some catch in certain rules where you will end up not beeing able to return the product. So, for people who can not decide on size or performance issues who needs to try them both, this could be a lovely reason if the company offers that.

But the ones who buy like each size of iPhone to review on Youtube and return them, or as you said, buying 8 gb M1 Macbooks while waiting their 16 gb Macbook to ship is somehow legal/valid but abuse of the possibility. I repeat, I do not judge anyone who does that, it is their right to do, I just do not approuve it and would not do it, and such things could result in the future for companies to stop those return policies unless it is mandated by the law of the country. But then again, laws can change especially if such powerful/influencal companies are involved. So, because of the abuse of the right, people would loose such a nice possibility that helps to make the decision easy.

PS: Keeping them both 12.9” and 11”, if the economics had permitted me, would have been such an ideal solution. ?

In the current environment, I can actually understand those who buy the 8GB M1 now while waiting for 16GB. If you need something for telework ASAP, you can't exactly wait 1 month to get the configuration you actually need so I kinda blame this on Apple for not making them available right away (and not making 16GB base RAM).

Honestly, I'm considering doing the same now. I was exposed to someone COVID positive so I was suddenly put on telework starting yesterday pending test results. Right now, I'm self isolating in my bedroom and have no access to the desktops with the nice 27" displays. My current Intel-based laptop will overheat if I try to use it in bed so I'm looking at buying a new MacBook Air + using my iPad as second screen.

Returns

We fundamentally believe you will be thrilled with the products you purchase from the Apple Store. That’s because we go out of our way to ensure that they’re designed and built to be just what you need. We understand, however, that sometimes a product may not be what you expected it to be. In that unlikely event, we invite you to review the following terms related to returning a product.

For iPhone returns, you may return your undamaged iPhone with its included accessories within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Here’s the important part: returning your iPhone may not automatically cancel or reset your wireless account; you are responsible for your wireless service agreement and for any applicable fees associated with your wireless account. Please contact your provider for more information.

For any other undamaged product, simply return it with the original receipt (or gift receipt) and original packaging within 14 days of the date you receive the product. If the item is returned within this timeframe, we’ll exchange it or offer a refund based upon the original payment method. For returns to an Apple Retail Store for cash, cash equivalent, and check transactions over $250, Apple will mail a refund check to you within 10 business days. Please note the following:

  • Products can be returned only in the country or region in which they were originally purchased.
  • The following products are not eligible for return: electronic software downloads, subscriptions to the Software-Up-To-Date program, Apple Store Gift Cards, and any Apple Developer Connection products.
  • In the case of items returned with a gift receipt, Apple will offer you an Apple Store Gift Card equal to the purchase price of the gift, including tax and any other fees.
  • Apple provides security features to enable you to protect your product in case of loss or theft. If you do not disable these features prior to returning your device, Apple may refuse the return or exchange.
  • Opened software cannot be returned if it contained a seal with the software license on the outside of the package and you could read the software license before opening its packaging. As an exception, you may return Apple-branded software if you do not agree to the licensing terms; however, you may not retain or otherwise use any copies of returned software. It’s not legal . . . and it’s not nice.

Again, I think that you have a valid reason, you need to work at home and your old intel laptop would not permit it. But also, I am sure that you will agree that many who order 8GB M1 while waiting for their 16 GB M1 to return the 8 GB version when the 16 GB version arrives most probably have a 2018 - 2019 Macbook or Macbook Pro where they can make their work or telework while waiting. So in case if you need the device ASAP and you have nothing else to work decently, then I totally understand, but doing it just because you can, is what I mean as an abuse.

Having said that, I hope that your quarantene period passes well and that you don’t get COVID! Stay safe and enjoy your devices in good health. ?

Thanks!

Strictly speaking, my Intel laptop can do it (performance-wise). I just need to deal with a cramped display, being constantly plugged in to power and my thighs getting burned (or at least uncomfortably warm).

It's still a hassle returning stuff especially now so I think those buying the 8GB M1 planning to exchange it for 16GB down the line probably have a good reason for doing it.

Well, ok, let me reformulate my words like this: I was saying those things for people who do it without any valid reason and abuse their rights. ?

Just pulled the trigger on the M1 MBA with 8GB RAM/512GB SSD with same day shipping. It's the only one that's not delayed until January in my area. I may actually end up keeping this one.

The 8GB/256GB would've been a guaranteed placeholder because apart from the RAM issue, it's also just way too little storage. The 8GB/512GB is not ideal but it's workable enough.
