So after the tedious and semi-painful transition from Paperless to Receipts a year ago (Paperless's inability to export anything useful being the main reason), I'm happy to say Receipts is still chugging along nicely with regular updates and improvements. It's far from perfect (you can't label/edit multiple files, for example, which would be a huge productivity boost), but at least it's not abandonware.

So are you literally using Receipts for receipts? I've used Paperless for financial/legal documents, so'd presumed Receipts wouldn't suitable.

Yes. I wish it were a bit more versatile so I could use it for things like Financial/Legal Documents (something Paperless *could* do, sadly). I mean... You can add them... but only as far as scanning and adding them to the database for safekeeping, but Receipts doesn't recognize them as a separate category. I wish it did.

DevonThink is way overkill for Paperless function. It's like using an 18 wheeler to visit your aunt. DevonThink costs a lot of money and will steal a lot of your time. And in some cases (mine), the relationship never quite works out.

Receipts sound great.

MacJournal has never quite recovered from its Mariner years. MacJournal was ground-breaking before Mariner got their paws on it. It's a bit clunky these days in comparison to iAWriter, Typora, nvAlt (now on life support itself), Scrivener.

Yojimbo is another organizer that works pretty well.

I am also a DevonThink user and I agree, as someone using it for scanning and storing documents, it feels like it's capable of a ton more than what I am using it for. Yet it's reliable, and I appreciate the built-in OCR functionality. I haven't really bothered to look for alternatives. I did a search for Yojimbo (mentioned above) and the interface screenshot reminds me of the OS X 10.4 "Tiger" days. Not to say that it wouldn't work, but is it really being updated?

As a regular MacJournal user I'd say it's also reliable and gets the job done, but its interface and features could use a refresh. Day One and many others have incredibly slick interfaces with iOS apps to match. Every now and then I take a look around at the alternatives, and I've come close to making the jump once before, but it still gets the job done and so I ultimately stay with it out of comfort.

I've owned Yojimbo for a long time, and it's handy for saving informative bits from websites I visit. But I also own Paperless, and it is in no way a substitute; I couldn't even begin to imagine how I would replace Paperless with Yojimbo.

And the most recent update for Yojimbo (a minor one) was a year and a half ago.

I posted this question in another thread, but posting here because I believe Mariner Software's apps go beyond just Paperless, one of my favourite Mac apps which has great integration with my Fujutisu ScanSnap scanner. Their other apps include MacGourmet Deluxe, Persona, Contour

It seems the company has stopped trading/gone belly up/closed down etc. The website is offline, their emails are bouncing and I've seen no updates (or social posts) for a very long time. I can't find any official news online - but they're still offering their apps for sale on the App Store.

marinersoft.com: Down/Offline
https://marinersoftware.deskpro.com/ : Online
Emails: Bouncing/not working
Twitter/X: Last post was from July 17, 2020 (last replied on Oct 12, 2020)
App Store: Still selling apps.

Does anyone have any info/background on this company, or do I need to find alternative (supported) software now?

Thanks!
Someone of my age may recall I put a post in their community forums, asking for information about the contents of docs that were placed within; specifically, how do we get to good, undamaged content if the company should close? I don't recall the answer, but it did cause me not to upgrade Paperless! I used other Mariner items as well.

The problem is eventually, you'll probably have to upgrade something... And then all your Mariner software will no longer work. I converted all my files to Receipts App. It was a bit painful, but at least I have access again.

Hey Folks, I actually worked for Mariner back in the day in tier 1 support and did video tutorials for them. Since I resigned due to lack of hours, they revamped the website, but they probably went under when COVID hit. I first hooked up with them because they were creating a screenwriting program called Montage but they abandoned it because of lack of development dollars. They would then acquire different titles and would put their spin on them. At the time, Michael Wray ran the show. I'll reach out to their in-house developer to find out what the heck happened and report back.
Hi...i am hoping you can help me. I bought Mac Gourmet years ago. My computer recently died, bought a new Mac, but unable to open software without serial number that i don't have....It is frustrating that all my treasured recipes are on my computer however unable to open and no one to help. Is there a way around this? Thank you

Ugh. Do you still have access to the old Mac? Is it completely dead? I think you may need to see if you can "migrate" files from the old Mac to the new Mac so that the serial number carries over. Do you have access to a Time Machine backup?

Alternatively, if there are any recipe forums where people may be using Mac Gourmet, I'd see if someone can share their serial number and name with you so you can use that for authentication, or possibly migrate their settings files to your new Mac.

Reddit may also be a good resource to find such a person. I would first search Reddit for both "Mac Gourmet" and MacGourmet to see if there are any users, and send them a direct message (DM) to see if they'd share this information with you. If that fails, I would post a message to the macapps sub-reddit.

OK, here's another option that I would almost try first. There's someone on eBay who's selling a MacGourmet Deluxe (clickable link) CD-ROM (!!) with serial number. Hopefully you'll be able to use the same serial number for the version you have installed on your Mac now.

Worst case scenario is that you're out $30.

There are also a number of other sellers of MacGourmet CD-ROMs, but they do not appear to be the Deluxe version.

Last comment I promise! I also found MacGourmet Deluxe on Walmart.com of all places -- clickable link.

Thank you i will give it a try. My computer is dead dead and Apple did give me the old hard drive. They as I said did get everything moved over....I just can't open it without the serial number. I bought it literally 15-20 years ago and doubt the serial number was on my last computer? I don't know I don't have a techy knowledge.
I have started Paprika....but can't find so many of my recipes....I know this may sound trivial but German cookie recipes and all the recipes I have perfected over the years, not the end of the world but.......

Thank you I appreciate everyones help!

If you haven't bought Paprika yet...it always goes on sale for half price around thanksgiving.

I'm in the same boat - I've settled on paperless-ngx as my new app - a bit more maintenance, but I won't be tied to closed source software for something that does need to stand the test of time more than other software.

I had a crack writing a trivial Ruby migration tool from Mariner Paperless to Paperless-NGX - it's fairly straightforward. I just want to nail down the migration of merchants to correspondents and a few other bits and pieces.

I'm going to check in anything I come up with here - https://github.com/bwalding/paperless-migration
(it's not pretty, but this is not my life's passion - I just want the migration to be done so I can forget about the old Paperless!)

update....Walmart has it on their website...but they don't have it. They canceled my order. Found one on Etsy that said it was MacGourmet 4 but got it and it is just standard Mac Gourmet. So found another.....but we will see I don't think it is going to work though. I did find my serial number for MacGourmet 3....but when I updated to 4 at some point it became obsolete. I have a file that says MacGourmet 3 but it is really 4. It is just so frustrating.

Looks like Mike Wray is now working for Executive Talent Partners? Saw he was on LinkedIn as well if someone has a connection with him there.
