If the Max is sufficiently powerful for your needs than it is a better value than Ultra, since even if the latter gives you more x/$, that doesn't really matter if the additional x you are getting is unnecessary.

Analogy: if I need 800 calories for dinner but the restaurant has a "supersize" option with 2400 calories for only twice the cost, the regular option is still better because it provides the proper amount of nutrition instead of making me fat for twice the money.

If rumors are true, the next M4 SOC's release will be interesting to watch,
as if the next MBP M4 Max is coming later this year,
and the next Mac Studio M4 Ultra is coming in spring 2025;
the MS M2 Ultra and mainly, the MacPro M2 Ultra will be the worst options powerVsbudget machine Apple had ever sell ever for those 6 months as they would be just far far slower than the actual-at-that-time MBP Max M4 in every aspect, CPU, CPU, ANE (38 trillion M4 vs 15.8 trillion M2 for the regular SOC version) and another possible newer techs (RAM/SSD/WIFI/Bluetooth/Thunderbolt).

Meaning that if you want any computer intensive tasks on Mac, both your most powerful option, and then your best money/performance option, would be buying a laptop. (plus you get a free 16" XDR screen, a backlit keyboard, magic trackpad and a 18h battery!!!)

sorry, but the analogy cant apply here.

I've been developing apps, and the apps your are using, are just limited by the computer performance avaliable on market, what means, if you could have right now the power of a super computer in your laptop for 1200USD, your needs would be different, so, your "covered needs" are limited by the market at this time, your needs change with the power available, so you dont cover your needs, you just ACCEPT the actual limitations

My perspective is does the machine get the job done for me at a reasonable price and I have an M1 Max Studio and love it. I would have bought the Ultra if they were in stock at one of my local stores but they were all out. I live in a state without sales taxes and my local stores often get cleaned out because the neighboring state has sales taxes. The stores in the next state over had plenty of the Ultra Studios. It turns out that the M1 Max is fine for my needs. There are times when I would have liked more RAM but I can run some programs on my MacBook Pro concurrently with the programs on my Studio.

The Max Studio is more power than the vast majority will need. Those of us that need a Studio are small in percentages and those that need an Ultra are even smaller.

I do look forward to see how Apple solves the interconnect issues on the Ultra. I don't see myself buying one as the next Max will probably be way more capable than my M1 Max.
