hmm... i think its more like we need to define what choppy n laggy is...

anyway does apple plan to fix this software wise problem soon? (at least in the next few patches??)

well lets just say its not as smooth as it should be :)

I think this is a software issue because even if you force the discrete graphics card, it doesn't improve. On a side note, safari is improving with each update.

Hope Aperture gets updated soon as when you zoom into a photo it displays the same behaviour laggy/choppy.

Speaking of Aperture, is it supposed to lag when you are editing a 24 megapixel RAW-photo with some strokes with filters like sharpen and definition in fullscreen? It is very laggy when I'm editing my photos after adding som brush strokes with effects, especially sharpen.

I'm running 16 GB RAM and 2,6 GHz Ivy.

im new to aperture so not sure! im not even using it to edit RAW, just editing a small jpg file, it is very laggy, say for instance using the skin smoothing tool with a colour overlay, im not exaggerating when i say the brush strokes show up seconds later, very frustrating because you cannot tell the areas that you are brushing. has it always been like this?

I've had my retina MacBook Pro 2,6 GHz 16 GB version for almost a week now, and its fantastic in so many ways. The retina display is the most stunning display I've ever seen, and I really enjoy using my MacBook because of it.

However, I've noticed that a broad spectre of Mountain Lion is buggy as nothing I've ever used from Apple. For instance, Safari is at times nearly unusable.

- I've seen this been discussed here before, but I still want to bring it up again. Scrolling is not what I'm used to. Depending on which site I visit, it ranges from almost perfect (i.e. MacRumors, reddit and even some image heavy blogs and news sites) to utter garbage. Facebook being the absolute worst. When scrolling down my news feed, it often feels like a slide show with around 2 fps. Laggy as nothing else.

- Typing also is a pain. Text goes invincible, then to appear again, and then disappear again, seemingly at random. Sometimes one line of text is overlapping the previous line, and it's basically a complete mess. This could be from the autocorrect function, as I've noticed sites like facebook are far worse than when I'm writing now, for instance (on facebook I write in norwegian which has no dictionary yet, while this is obviously in english).

Scrolling is a problem not only in Safari, but also in other parts of Mountain Lion.
- In example, scrolling through my iTunes library is not as fluid and smooth as it was on my iMac running Lion. While smoother than scrolling facebook in Safari, it still is sub-par fps and feels laggy.
- However, scrolling through exremely high resolution photos in Aperture is smooth as butter, even still when I have tons of thumbnails on screen at the same time.
- This suggest that this is a software problem, not a hardware problem like I've seen suggested on this forum before.
- Even the OS itself sometimes is laggy, with occasional visible hiccups in the animations when I'm switching apps with Mission Control. This, however, is very rare (and it doesn't seem to correspond with the number of apps I'm running at the same time)
- Basically, there are good and bad apps when it comes to smooth graphics. Good ones being most of the standard apps, while App Store, Safari, Calendar and iTunes seems to be the worst.

Anyone else experincing the same with their retina MacBook Pro? Suggestions? Are Apple working on this?

Discuss.
It sure is unfortunate the issues you describe I have had mines almost a month now and have experienced none of the issues you described it is the most slick mac I have ever had the pleasure to work on.

----------

So can we confirm that this problem is not unique to my Mac, and is in fact something that appears on every MacBook Pro retina?

I have 5 days left of my open return, so it would be great to know if I should return my MacBook or wait for Apple to release a software update. I don't have an Apple Store in my country, so there are no Apple staff that can help me, other than over phone (which sucks).

Absolutely no issues from me it's a small minority I'm afraid who are having trouble I think. I could not be happier with the rMBP

Yeap, choppy, very choppy. I've done a clean install (well, several of them to be honest), and it doesn't help. It's clear that the problem is bad coding at the HiDPI scaling since when I set the resolution to native 2880x1800 (setresX) it becomes really smooth.
And I can play "Spec Ops" at 2880x1800 with all details in High really smoothly when on Windows 8 via Bootcamp. So, all that "hardware isn't strong enough" to deal with the scaling isn't true. And oddly I get basically the same lag on pages like TheVerge scrolling using Intel HD or forcing the GT650M.
Well, since technically they are now over with the battery issues and all that iOS 6 integration, I hope they focus on performance on the next build of ML (10.8.3).

I spoke with an Apple employee today, who could confirm that Apple has indeed recieved several complaints about the issue and are working on it.

The tests similar to "maximizing contacts" are choppy as hell even on my 2012 Air. It's clearly a software problem in Mountain Lion.

Works like a charm

Mountain Lion works like a champ for my rMBP i sure would hate to be in the minority right now.

Interesting. Could you try to load and scroll at various speeds on these two sites, and post results?

http://www.aftenposten.no
http://www.nrk.no

Tried both sites on windows 7 and vista and they are terrible also so its not a ML issue here i would say.

I haven't read the rest of this thread just yet, but your problem isn't unique to the retina MacBook Pros, but my early 2011 MBP is having these EXACT same issues in Safari. It only happened after upgrading to Mountain Lion. I'm going to try Chrome, and see if it's any better.
Edit: Honestly my whole machine has become extremely buggy all of the sudden really.(As of late)
