Is my iTunes library too large?

On the syncing tab in iTunes preferences, there's an option to "disable automatic syncing" but it only applies to iPods and iPhones. Is there anyway to disable auto sync for an :apple:TV? Every time I open iTunes, it starts syncing, and, the :apple:TV is essentially useless while it's syncing.
 
Another question: At what size does an iTunes library start causing prformance issues either for ATV or for iTunes.

My iTunes library is pretty large (the library xml file is 115.7 MB). My library has about 450 GB of music, and about 20GB of video and podcasts.
 
What kind of system are you using?

I would think that the upper limit of iTunes scales with the power of your machine.
 
Jesus bro, do you have like every song made in the last 10 years? lol. I'm a DJ and Im running close to 100gb's of music
 
When in iTunes click on "AppleTV" (or whatever you named your AppleTV) from the device listing on the left. Once selected you should see tabs for the AppleTV for Music, Video, PodCast, etc... and under each tab you can select your syncing options like all, none, recent, etc...

Thanks, but those are options for what to sync, not when to sync. I want to disable automatic syncing every time I load iTunes.
 
It's on the summary Apple TV page

Click the "Custom Sync" and set it up the way you want
Also I'm not having any issues with this size of library (about 1.6TB worth)
 
mine has problems

approx 125,000 songs, 3,000 movies, and a couple thousand tv shows. Everything is laggy as all getout. I wish there was a way you could tell the software to only sync up the movies and tv shows. I'm sure that my music constitutes 90% of the itunes library, and I don't care about having it accessible from the apple tv, but the software forces me to load the entire huge library.

My xml file is about 50MB, and I definitely notice when iTunes decides to sync. My observations are that regardless of your syncing options, iTunes will always sync the xml file at startup of iTunes or the Apple TV. If you have any 'smart' options turned on, it will sync when it detects a change. For example, if you say 'Sync the n most recent unwatched it' will resync anytime you watch one of those previously unwatched movies.

To make this problem worse, you can turn off syncing completely. Then iTunes will reload the xml file every time you browse the streamed iTunes library - it makes the Apple TV completely unusable (and this on a wired 10/100/1000 network).

At present, I use 'custom sync' with only some photos and podcasts enabled. I also never close iTunes - it only costs me ~100MB of real memory to keep it running.

If you don't mind me asking, how much of that is actually legal?

Thats over $100,000.00 worth of music. I hope someone can report you to the RIAA. They would sue you for $3,000.00 per song.
 
how about

none of your business? If I walk into your living room, I damn sure would not think to ask "Hey did you buy all the cds in your rack there, or did you steal some of them?" This is a thread about itunes libraries, not the source of the content therein.

Impressive. What kind of hard drive array are you running to store all of that? 125,000 songs * 4MB each = 500GB + 3,000 movies *1GB each = 3TB + 2,000 TV shows * 300MB = 600GB for a grand total of 4.1TB. Truely impressive. And I thought my 3TB library of TV shows was huge.
 
I know that holding down Command+Option while connecting an iPod prevents the iPod from automatically syncing. Maybe holding Command+Option as iTunes opens would prevent your Apple TV from syncing. (Though, if you hold the keys too early, it may trigger iTunes' Choose Library window.)
 
willie's not exactly on the up and up. I believe he calls it "borrowing".
 
My music library is not the same in size, 250gig worth. The only time I see a drag is when I first load them up into iTunes. It takes forever to load up all the songs. Once they are loaded I have not seen any performance issues.

Are you seeing a lag? Are you going over a network wired or wireless? Or are they stored locally and you are having problems with them on your local computer?

My setup is via a music server with hard wired connections. No lag or drops yet.

each cd would be almost 1GB RAW.

so thats like 500 CDs?

I never have a problem with syncing. I use the custom sync to choose what content I want on the atv and stream the rest. When my Atv is syncing, it is not useless as most of u say. I can still access my whole library while it is syncing and if I choose to watch or listen to something, the syncing will stop and let me do what I want. When I'm done watching, the syncing will resume where it stopped.

What's with you? I have around 800 CDs all ripped to Lossless are around 350GB...
