So can you try to run hardware test?

Don't know why AHT still won't run, (no errors just goes straight to login), but whilst in Tiger which boots about 8 seconds after the white screen appears, the complete system runs fine. I can watch DVDs and can get an output from nvram -p.
Boot back into ML and no dice. It's gotta be a combination of 10.8.2 and my hardware.
Can you see anything in the Corecrypto kext plists that might point to a problem?

The literature that goes with FIPS3 goes;
This installation will place the following on your OS X Mountain Lion system: Directory: /usr/libexec/
File:
"cc_fips_test"
Upon restart, your system will automatically perform the required
Power–On–Self–Test (POST).
If there is any problem identified with the Apple OSX CoreCrypto Module, the system boot process will log the error to system.log, immediately halt and the system will shutdown. Otherwise, the normal boot process will continue without issue.
If a failure is detected and the system is shutdown, you should perform the following to correct it:
1) Restart the system in Single-User Mode.
(Hold down the <command> and <S> keys during restart) Starting up in single-user mode
2) Review the System Log for clarification of problem(s) detected. Secure Log is located at: /var/log/system.log
3) If Tool related issues are found, re-run this installer and try again.
4) If the integrity of the Security Module has failed validation, it is best to re-Install OS X Mountain Lion, any software updates as well as re-installing this tool.

I still don't understand why FIPS is enabled in the first place and can't be disabled.

I still don't understand why FIPS is enabled in the first place and can't be disabled.

Here's my new action plan;

1. Ignore FIPS if possible.
2. Boot from recovery on a working supported valid ML install. Clone the drive to a Firewire HD.
3. Boot back to the desktop and change/replace boot.efi files etc as necessary on the FW HD.
4. Clone this modded system to the MP1,1.
5. Boot to the new install and set up messages and see what else works/fails.

By the way the valid ML install on the Air I have also displays the FIPS messages for some reason.

But does the MBA boots as slow?

I'll tell you when I get out of this mire I'm in. I've wiped and installed a couple of times today.
I'm actually reinstalling from USB right now and will migrate my bits across.
Ugh!!

Don't use Migration Assistant first, check if the problem exist before using MA.

Ok, bit more of a complete answer now.
After one of my many fresh installs, booting from Tiger is very quick. I don't get the FIPS messages as part of the bootlog.
What I do get however are the below......;

What graphics card are you using on Tiger? Is this on Tiger? If you use cards like 5770, 2800XT and not 7300GT or X1900XT it definitely won't work simply because Tiger does not have the required drivers.

To run AHT, you need the Disc 2 - Application Installer that came with the Mac Pro.

Not in my case,

2exon5v.png

I've been trying to copy the files to their own partition and boot AHT from there, but no luck so far.

Well.. my bad, Macs before 10.5 was on Disc 1 Macs on or after 10.6 was on Disc 2. Hold down D key while the DVD is in? Have you make sure that the disc is actually working? Ref link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Should be. I just installed Tiger from it.

EDIT: Right, got AHT to run, (in extended), came up clean. I think the problem was because the disc was in the second, lower drive connected to the spare ODD SATA?

I don't get what you mean.. What disc was in the spare SATA? You mean you use the 2 additional SATA port for DVD drive?

Nope, sorry. I mean there are unused SATA ports on the MOBO. One of the ODDs is connected there. AHT wouldn't run from that. But the original IDE drive is fine.

I suggest that you don't try with ML at this stage. Stay on Lion until the problem is resolved.

ML is quite useable for me right now but I may stay on 10.8.2 unless a major fix or enhancement is announced by AAPL. That said I'll keep going with this possible logic board issue as I still have a problem when booted from Tiger with the 10.8 drive not even in the machine.

EDIT: I'm wondering if there are a few more things Apple have included in ML, (at an extremely low level), that make running it unsupported difficult?

Today I went to install Snow Leopard as a test OS on a separate drive. So popped in the disk and go the following on double clicking Install MacOSX;

Anyway, nvram -p under ML gets me nvram: nvram is not supported on this system

Under Snow it outputs;
platform-uuid %00%00%00%00%00%00%10%00%80%00%00%17%g3%05%ac%f1
