iMac Pro, slotting in nicely between both, touch screen, gunmetal grey styling and no compromises on performance...Ah and then I woke up... :)

maybe lowering the prices... hahaha
You couldn't even get that out without laughing ;)

I don't see Apple cutting prices in all seriousness, but I would like to see is more modern configuration options, i.e., standard SSD instead of 5400 rpm drives

Yeah, they'll rename it the Mac. Just makes sense from a consistency standpoint. Notice how the watch is called Apple Watch, not iWatch. I bet they would have gotten rid of the iPhone name in favor of Apple Phone a while ago if iPhone wasn't such a killer brand.

Maybe we'll also get a redesign? If so I expect the Mac to have rounded, slim bezels; and then a recessed, deeper part behind the monitor to house the components. Think iPhone Smart Battery Case behind the monitor. No chin.

They renamed OS X, so yeah, its quite possible. I for one hate the idea of such a move. I think the iMac name is so iconic, I guess if they did rename it, I'm happy to have the last generation of iMacs

I think, at this point, it's becoming painfully apparent that Apple is phasing themselves out of the traditional computer market. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm unfortunately probably not wrong.

We finally have a solid date and you can't wait 7 days till making such wild claims?

EDIT: I realized that you posted that before the announcement.

I Doubt all of this. Not that it wouldn't be nice to have. Just doesn't seem that likely anytime soon.

"hello again" could be a clue of iMac Pro. It has to be something ground breaking, or the marketing team is lost...

Kaby Lake i5- 7600K and i7-7700K have been both spotted as retail version out there. At least an iMac update with these and Polaris 10 based RX 470 and RX 485 are possible.

But still, I think, Apple is going to show us the next gen. desktop computer.

I'm with you on the name change and I'd really like to see Apple move on from the iMac name. Sure, it's iconic. But so was the famous full title "Macintosh" from 1984, but Apple did away with the name only to replace it with the iMac. I think it's entirely possible the same thing will happen once again next week, marking an 18 year return to "hello again", and like 1998, this would be the perfect opportunity for Apple to move ahead with any kind of rebranding.

It's true that the name is totally inconsistent with Apple's eco-system naming scheme in 2016 and moving ahead. As noted, OS X had its run for a decade and is no longer, replaced by macOS which makes much more sense today than it did years ago. The preface "i" should be reserved only for those iOS devices while Mac products prefaced by "Mac". It just makes sense.

I could see a simplification/streamlining of the lineup:
Mac (iMac)
Mac Pro
MacBook
MacBook Pro

And then new displays.

I have no basis to make this on other than my personal opinion. I don't see Apple getting out of the Mac game, at all, but I can see cutting back to less SKUs and greatly simplifying the question of "which Mac should I buy?"

Tim Cook said 'we love Mac' so maybe Apple will say 'hello again' to the Mac nomenclature for desktop/laptop computers and keep the 'i' for iOS computers, e.g. iMacPad TV Pro ;)

hello again. Apple has greeted with "hello." or "hello again" when they've invented or reinvented their all-in-one computers. Is it time to drop the i from iMac?

This is lazy, I didn't realize they used "hello again" already, lol.

The last time Apple used the "hello again" line was when the iMac was originally announced in 1998. A major revamp is coming next week -- no doubt. What it looks like remains to be seen, but nothing in the quoted post is radical. I expect a complete redesign and possibly rebranding of iMac.

Going back to the 2x2 matrix (consumer/pro) would be a nice welcome return, but it's apparent that Apple has grown so large that I fear if they can even maintain such an over simplified line up these days.

I hope they can make it work though. I do like that lineup you mentioned.

If we do go back to basics, I do see the mini biting the dust, but when you mention the Mac Pro, I wonder if a super powered iMac will just replace the trash can Mac Pro?

Let's play some 27th October Bingo

Updates
  • Macbook (Kaby Lake)
  • Mac Pro (Broadwell-EP + Polaris & Vega 11 + beefier PSU/cooling + lower price point)
  • iMac starup models (old design, new CPU's, cheap)
Redesigned models
  • iMac better models (Pro?) (Kaby Lake + Polaris), new design and colour(s)
  • Mac Mini (totally different concept and MBP level performance, homeKit server)
  • MBP 15" with Magic stripe (Skylake Iris Pro + Polaris 11)
  • MBP 13"/ MB Air combination. (Will look like a MB's big brother, although heavier and with a cooling fan, Kaby Lake U)
Demos & visitors
  • Some game engines built for Metal v2. Maybe Blizzard?
  • HomeKit server
  • Apple Pro apps
  • iPad Pro and Mac together, "how our users are using our tech in a new ways"
  • IBM changed 90.000 PC's to Mac's and saved money - some Keynotes to prove it - some news how IBM will implement their apps on Mac
One More Thing
  • 10.5" iPad Pro mini

At least. But there could be new ideas for computing too, and perhaps attempts to make Apple Watch and iPad Pro a must have for a Mac user.

iMac's "i" is a remnant of the Internet boom of the late 90s/early2000. Today we are living on the emerge of the Internet of Things and AR / VR and the second generation of AI like Siri. iMac could be a strong brand, but Apple might want to send a signal that it is more than iMac or A desktop.

So what? Call it "Mac"? That won't work because all their computers are Macs.

MacBook
MacBook Pro
MacBook Air
Mac Mini
Mac Pro
"iMac" - MacDesktop, MacMagic, MacScreen?

The big thing I notice is that their $2,300 27" iMac option comes with 8GB of RAM. Really? A $2,000+ plus machine? Apple, it's 2016 out here. I just hope they bump it to 16GB to save some money for me!

You both are forgetting the Mac Mini. So many people dismiss it, but I think it plays an important role in their lineup. It's the cheapest Mac ($499) vs $1,200 for their next desktop system and I know it's the only Mac that didn't have too much sticker shock for many people I know.

Neither does the name "iMac" in that list you just wrote currently. The iMac name standing out of the list looks a lot like this:

I agree that simply the name "Mac" is odd in itself. There's no product simply called "i" or "Apple", but if Apple can figure out a new name branding to follow after "Mac"' i think they'll go with it.

No, I mentioned the mini in my post, and I even said that I'm not sure they would go back to a 2x2 matrix lineup, at least for the desktop side. For notebooks I can see them going back to just MacBook and MacBook Pro only.

But for desktops however, if Apple truly wanted to go simple, I would guess the product that would have to go would be the mini. Correct me if I'm wrong, but despite the Mini's most affordable price in the lineup, I think the Mac Pro actually makes more money. Also, with a vacuum on the low end, Apple could try and fill it more by keeping the cheaper versions of the 21.5" iMac in the lineup, sans retina, and dropping the price down to under $999.

Mind you, I'm just spit balling here. I don't know or truly think they would go this approach for desktops.

Edit: If Apple keeps the mini, it would just be like the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano. Super cheap entry priced products that just sit in Apple's lineup and don't get updated for years at a time. Actually, it's already happening as we speak, and I think the days of annual refreshes of the mini are a thing of the past.

Okay, I've been waiting and holding off on buying an iMac for the past 5-6 months, since I "knew" they'd be updating it in the fall. Then, the 10/27 event was announced, everyone is getting excited and jacked up for new iMacs with high-end graphic cards, faster processors and maybe larger SSDs coming standard (and maybe AR and/or VR capability), but then I see this article:

This is the first time since 1997 that I seriously considered switching to Windows, especially in light of this story:

Frankly, I'm sick and tired of waiting around to buy a new computer because the MacRumors Buyers Guide tells me not to buy. I understand that the advice there is based on Apple's history of computer updates, and the assumption that they will continue to follow the same pattern. But, obviously, since Steve Jobs' passing, Tim Cook has not been the leader we were all hoping for. Sure, the company is still making big money, but they are clearly not innovating with the same level of enthusiasm and energy as they were 10 years ago. Meanwhile, Microsoft seems to have taken a cue from Apple by (1) innovating on their own and making some of their own computer hardware (finally), (2) opening up Microsoft retail stores, and (3) finally shipping some products which work as advertised.

If Apple really drops the ball on this iMac thing, AND IF Microsoft really does reveal new all-in-one Surface PCs next Wednesday, then I think Apple will need to say goodbye to a large number of old customers, starting with me. I have owned Apple computers since switching from a dual-floppy IBM PC with 256 KB RAM running DOS to a Macintosh Plus in 1987. I really never thought I would switch back away from Mac, but Apple's actions (or inactions) may finally be pushing me to jump ship almost 30 years later.

A new Forbes article today claims to leak the MacBook Pro update to be announced on the 27th. Nothing that hasn't been speculated on before, but the big takeaway was that it won't be actually available until 2Q 2017. No mention of iMac, Mac Mini or Mac Pro ;>(

I really can't believe that Apple would hold a press event just to announce something that won't be available for 6 months. Why build hype for something that consumers can't then get near instant gratification for?

I know they are constrained somewhat by intel CPU availability with regards to Kabylake, but all announcing new models that won't ship until Q2 would do is completely kill their already declining Mac revenue for the next 2 quarters.

Personally I would much rather they ship redesigned Skylake models now, and spec bump them to Kabylake next year, but Tim hasn't phoned me for advice on this one....maybe he has lost my number?

The only product line that that info remotely makes sense with is the Mac Pro. It is the only line where the current sales volumn is not enough to cause a problem by announcing something so far in advance. I just can't see them announcing MacBooks or iMacs without being available to purchase within weeks, and I can't see them utilizing the "hello again" invite for an only laptop announcement.
