Is Photography fun? I am taking a trip to the Golden Gate among other sites this weekend and I surely will enjoy taking photos with my Canons. If I only had my new iPhone 13 (which I will use to take a few shots) photography would not be as fun. The Powershot makes photography fun because of all its features, its ability to be viewed clearly in direct sunlight (something not all phones can accomplish) among other features. I also will not be posting every photo I take to social media. Yes I will post a few but not everything. So many people on FB post everything they shoot and I get irritated with all the unnecessary details.

I think you’ll find most people in the Digital Photography forum find photography fun, regardless of the camera they use :). I wonder if a thread title like “Why is photography fun?“ or “Why do you find photography fun?” may get you closer to what you’re after?

Canon is fun. Nikon is not as fun for me. The camera defiantly does help.

Sure, cameras can help people have fun. But, to be fair, you’re not asking whether a brand is fun. You’re asking whether ”Photography is fun”, and it is for most people on this forum. Are you really asking people on a forum you’ve been a part of for a while now whether their hobby or profession is fun?

I love photography, have for years. Having said that, I love it best when I am using gear that I also love. That is typically not a phone. There’s something…disconnected about it. I appreciate a nice viewfinder and some dials that click. Ones that I can use without even looking.

Lets be clear, photography is fun, thinking of a shot, framing it to make it look interesting. The fun is the challenge of it all.

Now, taking a picture to post on Instagram or Facebook is just what it is. A meaningless snapshot with no thought involved.

What’s not fun is being behind someone at a photogenic spot who has either too much equipment, doesn’t know how to use it, or decides they need to change their settings without moving out of the way. Meanwhile I can take the same photo in two seconds with my iPhone and probably have it look better than most amateur photographers. Photography is very expensive, requires too much equipment, and most of the work is done with expensive computers/software so the image you took is no longer true to life in my opinion.

Expensive Instagram and essentially the vinyl record loyalist of the photography world.

I agree with you. I also prefer the dials, many features, and such of a camera.

Sadly this type of photography dominates these days. The last time I was at the Golden gate taking pictures I had a 2MP digital camera and everyone was using flip phones. I look forward to taking shots with my Powershot and a few with my iPhone 13.

Photography is only as expensive as you make it. You can take a great shot with an iPhone, or it can look like crap. You can take a great shot with a $500 camera or a $5000 camera. What you can't get out of a $500 camera is detail.

My Powershot cost $500 and can shoot at 20MP. That’s far more detail than the ancient 2MP camera I used in 2006 the last time at the golden gate taking photos.

Megapixles is not what makes a great photo. It's the sensor.

True. However Powershot can take great photos. But probably not compared to your camera.
Anyone can take a great photo, it's the photographer not the equipment. Now not every camera can take a great detailed photo. There is a difference. 10 people framing the same subject with different equipment will get a different result.
