Many navigation apps allow you to download maps for offline use. Google Maps is one of them. Hopefully Apple adds this feature in the future.

I haven’t used a Garmin in years. Are map updates free now, or do you still have to purchase expensive yearly map updates?
Free updates. Yes I use apple maps since my watch and Mac also do.

Looks like Garmin charges for some updates and others are free. I took a quick look at their site and found some map updates going for upwards of $80 and some were free. Those seemed to be for newer cars that had a Garmin system installed when the vehicle was purchased. In those cases, it looks like the updates are free for a few years, then I assume they are paid.

For example, here's a map for North America on the Garmin site, called the "City Navigator," it's $99. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/c/road-maps/?FILTER_REGION_NORTHAMERICA=true

Where are they getting their map data from. or is that their own maps?

Seriously, can you determine the location of that image that MacNut posted above? It's a nice nighttime shot, taking great advantage of the lighting available and the shadows..... I don't see any street signs indicating his specific location at the time he made that shot, or a billboard advertising some company that does business in whatever city he lives....
That tree was on the Tonight Show last week. You can get its location information on IMDB.

I will take plenty of shots on vacation coming up. Yes and also a few with my iPhone.
You mentioned you took a lot of pics over the weekend. Care to share some of the comparisons from the Powershot and iPhone?

I've just started my 28th year as a freelance photographer and I still love it. The job is the hardest I've done when it comes to finding clients, learning new techniques in lighting and shooting but the rewards can be great. Like most anything, it can be as shallow or deep depending on the circumstances.
