On a scale of 1 to ps5, how hard are these things gonna be to get at say Best Buy in a month?
As @AutomaticApple mention, it won’t be easy.. I wouldn‘t go as far as to say it will be ps5 level of demand. But I suggest doing a preorder ASAP. However, in some cases retailers seem to value putting stock in stores compared to fulfilling online orders.

It can be annoying though. Trying to determine what options to take… given that there’s no specific date to when it will be available in stores. Because I can preorder it as soon as Apple allows it, but have my order delayed while there’s stock in stores.

Could always cancel the pre-order if you find stock in-store.

Yeah, but I wonder though. How does the pre-order work? It's a preauthorization charge.. Then it disappears after 2 or 3 days... until it's charged again when it's shipped.. correct?

I mean, that sounds like a good plan.. but I highly doubt there will be an open box at BB before WWDC. I think it's safe to say May 21st could possibly be when it's in customers hands. After that, 2 weeks when WWDC kicks off on June 7th. Those iPad Pros will be in short supply during that time period.

I'm definitely gonna pre-order, but have my eyes on in-store stock as well.

I actually can’t remember the last time I pre-ordered something from Apple. There may be a pre-auth. All I’m sure of is you don’t actually get charged until the item ships.

I think the last time I bought iPads were on sale at Best Buy and Target.

Its an $1100 iPad for the 12.9; I think people are forgetting that. If you want one when they 1st release, I don't think you'll have issue with pre-ordering on Friday.

Yeah, you looking at from the perspective up paying for the iPad Pro at full price. However, installments are an option. I normally do installments for my iPads.. but I have the Fold2 on installments, plan on paying for the cellular iPad Pro at full price.

The non-update that was the 2020 iPad Pro was back-ordered for a long time, I believe. Apple's going to match production to expected sales levels. They won't be manufacturing these as quickly as they do iPhones.

For the causal buyer, maybe it was. People who really wanted one, I.e. people on this board, were able to get them.

The days of shipping times slipping in the 1st minute or being available just don’t happen anymore.

“1 to ps5” hahaha

should be the new benchmark for everything

I’ve never seen such a world of hell to get an item since ... ps2

1st minute, agreed. This isn't as anticipated as iPhones with millions of customers trying to order so it looks like a DDOS attack.

That said, I seem to recall shipping dates for certain 2020 iPad Pro configurations had already slipped when I checked in the afternoon of preorders going live.

Best thing to do is pre-order on day 1. I wouldn't go crazy and try to order 1st minute but certainly sometime in the morning. As mentioned, one can always cancel the pre-order if in-store availability is better but if you wait on pre-ordering and retail channels are empty, shipping times could slip to weeks or even more than a month.

I will preorder directly, but I need one regardless. Just gotta decide if it is 12.9” or 11”… Or rather, I gotta decide if I will make the change to not hold my device as much or not. The 11” for my wanted use case is the best but the doctors really tell me I should stop holding devices so…

I’ve never seen such a demand “period.” It’s been over 5 months… and it’s still in short supply. Sells out in minutes.. not hours, or days.

Your right. I believe there was a 2020 iPad Pro Order thread that was ridiculously long.. due to the prolong wait time.

Call me crazy, I’m ordering within the 1st minute… item already saved. Would be thrilled if it mysteriously show up earlier than scheduled.

Yes, for some configurations it did slip. If you get on at a reasonable time you should be able to pre-order without a shipping delay.

It's Apple... they don't suffer from the same shortages as other companies. Apple is the number one customer of all these cottages. If they want more chips, TSMC will stop production of other companies parts and retool for Apple. Same for screens, batteries, etc. Apple is the biggest dog to ever exist, they toss billions around like pocket change.

The shortages we've seen in tech recently is due to miners and scalpers... while it's likely some scalpers are going to try and profit off the new iPad, they'd be damn foolish to do so since Apple isn't going to struggle with stock the way AMD (Or Nvidia) does with their parts. So if scalpers snag a bunch to toss on eBay they're going to get saddled with them and lose money.

Worst case scenario here, instead of getting your new iPad in mid May, you'll get it early June. No big deal. This isn't going to be a "wait 8 months to get one" type of deal.

You could also order through your cell phone carrier for a no interest financing option. Only problem with that is this would be for the cellular version and that'll be more than $1100.

Actually, the one reason I wouldn't buy from carriers is they've historically used carrier branded models with the eSIM or Apple Embedded SIM locked to the carrier (physical Nano SIM slot is unlocked). Hence, restricted cellular capabilities compared to unlocked.

Getting a customer service rep that's knowledgeable enough to lift the restrictions is practically impossible.
